Seamans was founded by Julius Seaman in 1933 with its first store in Brooklyn, New York. The chain was in business for more than 70 years until it merged into Levitz in 2005.

The furniture retailer Levitz Furniture Inc., which has 64 stores in 13 states, said yesterday that it would proceed with plans to merge with the Seaman Furniture Company and would close six stores. Levitz, based in Boca Raton, Fla., made a deal with Seaman as part of an effort to emerge from bankruptcy. The two companies entered into their agreement with the expectation of creating a holding company as part of Levitz's reorganization. Levitz said it would close four stores in Boston; one in Reading, Pa.; and another in Bakersfield, Calif.

Levitz Furniture was a nationwide chain of American furniture stores that helped create the "furniture warehouse" genre of retail furniture sales. It was in business for nearly 100 years before liquidating in bankruptcy in early 2008.
