This is the very first live recording that was ever made of one of my sets. Recorded live at Airhead's Trip 2 The Moon: Part 1 on July 12th 2002. This also has the distinction of being the very first booking I ever had that was at a party that I had absolutely no hand whatsoever in throwing. My first "real" booking if you want to use that term.

So obviously this is old as fuck. I had been DJing for a bit under two years at this point, but the first year and a bit of that was like....I barely practiced, I had only just started learning the basics. So obviously there are some slips in here. I hadn't quite gotten the hang of hearing which track needed adjusting yet, there are some stupid cuts, some mixes I would NEVER do now, a couple things got too far off the rails and had to be abandoned, etc.

I was 18, give me a break. =P

You can also hear a lot of my current style first starting to take shape. Sampling other tracks (though I wasn't quite good enough to sample a record then switch it out for another just yet, with one exception that I'll touch on in a sec), cuts, quick mixing, all that stuff makes an appearance here and there.

It was really interesting listening to this set for the first time in probably like 12 years and being able to pick out things that I did then that eventually grew into what I do now.

Now as for that one sampling trick, I am of course referring to the Dreadland '99/Heart of Gold mashup. That is NOT my trick. All credit for that goes to Donny D-Minus. I had done it at the time as a tribute, because Donny was my favourite DJ at the time and biggest influence, and I thought it would be a nice little tip of the hat. He felt......differently. It still comes up every time I see him lol (I love you Donny)

Also I ended up starting a little early and made the very stupid rookie mistake of not bringing any more records than I had planned on playing, so Heart of Gold ended up making a second appearance later in the set, because it was the only record I had left that I hadn't played through yet, that fit with what I was playing. I mean I could have pulled out Sicks Daze but, quite embarassingly, I couldn't mix that record yet. The intro always fucked me. It was a good bit longer before I got a handle on that lol

Anyways!

Recorded live at the Big Bop Entertainment Complex in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on two Technics 1200 turntables (this is a 100% vinyl set) and a Vestax mixer of a model that I don't remember, but you can see it in the picture.
