Breakfast Style

by djmanos

dj manos is Seattle's Seth Branum, a lifelong obsessive collector of music and one of the Northwest's best kept secrets. Manos was on the path to becoming a dj long before he ever bought his first pair of turntables. From his childhood dreams of being a radio dj, to early mix tapes that he made for playing in his car and attempting to woo high school crushes, he was already developing an ear for how to arrange pieces of music as chapters in a greater story.

A child of the 1980's, the foundation of his musical tastes were formed by an early love for punk rock's energy, politics and DIY esthetic while the emerging sounds of electro pop, industrial, and new age music combined with the prevalence of synthesizers in many film and television scores hinted at his future. Experiencing early Minneapolis raves as a teenager in the mid 90's, the sounds of acid house and techno also began to weave themselves into his consciousness. A move to Washington in 1997 at the height of Seattle's rave scene pushed him even further down this path until, at the end of the 20th century, he decided to purchase some turntables and finally give dj'ing a try.

Manos believes that a dj's duty is to present a unique auditory experience and embraces his love for a diverse spectrum of old and new sounds. However, if one thing does tie the music heard in a Manos dj set together it’s a psychedelic sensibility that strikes a balance between the ecstatic and the melancholy. At once sensuous and sentient, bizarre and macabre, this penchant for dissent and the transgressive has aligned with an understanding that it is the dance between these contrasting emotions that make up the essence of our shared human experience.

It’s this distinctive musical ethos that led Manos to a position as chief A&R manager at Innerflight Music, a longtime staple of Seattle's electronic music community. His ear for unorthodox and compelling sounds oversaw the label's most prolific and diverse period (November 2012-July 2015) with releases that, while firmly rooted in house/techno, always included elements to push the fan base to the fringes of those genres. During his tenure, the label saw releases from Tomas Jirku, Even Marc (aka Bluetech), Luke Mandala, Phil Western, J.Alvarez, Adam Collins, Jaymz Nylon, as well as remix contributions from such notables as Noah Pred, [a]pendics.shuffle, Deepchild, Pezzner, Rennie Foster, Hanssen, and Bryan Zentz.

Near the end of 2015, he found himself breaking away from an active role at Innerflight as other projects began to consume more of his time and energy. Becoming much more selective about which bookings he accepts, his energies have been focused on recording more studio mixes in a kaleidoscope of styles, and original music production under several top-secret aliases.
