Jon Hussey is DJing since the early nineties, kick-starting at the infamous Planet Dub night in Dublin!
Over the years Jon has promoted and resided at a number of Techno clubs throughout Ireland as well as playing in many Techno havens around Europe including London, Bratislava, Berlin, Leeds and Turin.

In '99 Jon was among the first group from Ireland to qualify for the Red Bull Music Academy which was held in Berlin where he met many like minded Techno artists helping to fuel his passion further.

During his time DJing Jon has been lucky enough to play alongside many of his all time favourite artists from Biosphere & Plaid to Surgeon, Joey Beltram, Steve Bicknell, Ancient Methods, Loktibrada, Rumenige, Neil Landstrumm, Reeko, DJ Boss, Bas Mooy, Oscar Mulero, Jerome Hill & AnD, playing in infamous Techno clubs like Tresor in Berlin and the Subclub in Bratislava!!

- What are your main influences ?

To answer this I've got to go back to my earliest Influences as even today I am still drawn while listening / dancing to the same elements, sounds and textures I was from the early blueprints of experimental and electronic music that I was exposed to !

Early influences electronic music wise would be New Order (I have very fond memories of buying Substance on cassette and playing it to death!). I also have very vivid memories of listening to Tangerine Dream for pure mesmerising late night trance music way before Eye Q Records ;) Around this curious time when alternative, indie, electronic, experimental and early house and techno seemed to be swelling from the same creative realms I was also listening to acts like Spacemen 3, AR Kane, Front242, Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, which all fused varying electronic and experimental elements together. The BBC alternative music show Snub TV at this time was for me a vision and window into these artists and other music worlds – (http://snub.tv/about-snub-tv/)

Equally then I was attracted to atmospheric ambient sounds as much as the hyped drum machine driven side of electronic music. Aphex's first ambient works, the Orbs adventures beyond the Ultraworld and the KLF's Chillout album were soundtracks of my life for at least 2 years! These brought me deeper to discover the magic of Brian Eno, Biosphere and early IDM acts like Seefeel who morphed beautifully into the effervescent noise of My Bloody Valentine as background bliss !

Labels wise early on the likes of WARP, R&S, XL Recordings and my all time favourite from the genius of Casper Pound - Rising High Records were blowing my mind! Acts with strange Technological sci-fi names like LFO, Nexus 21, EON, GTO, Model 500, Orbital were filling the record shops, pirate radio stations and it really felt like a takeover movement. Standout moments of tracks with unmistakable sounds for me were Beltrams 'Energy Flash' – hearing this at a Banba Rave in Cork on a loud system and being completely immersed watching the crowd lift off like a pow wow on steroids was completely unreal. Hearing LFO's 'LFO' had a very similar impact yet even more surreal and stark – almost like been hit with a jolt of futuristic uneasiness. Another real stand out track at this early time that stopped me in completely my tracks when I heard it first from a mixtape a friend had brought home from London in 1990 was EON's 'Spice' with it's samples from the David Lynch movie 'Dune' and the crazy analog staccato bleeps it sounded like it was arriving from the Red Planet!

My weekly underground dose around this time was received at the infamous Dublin club SIDES from the brilliant resident DJ's Liam Dollard, Pat Hyland, Johnny Moy and David Holmes! Also swapping / borrowing and sourcing;) much coveted mixtapes from the club at the time which were like Gold dust! On the DJ side of this early inspiration seeing Andrew Weatherall from the 'Sabres of Paradise' fame mix an build intense psychedelic mayhem while blending tracks was mindblowing – this completely exposed me to the possibility of creating chemistry while DJing based on perfect timing, mixing, track selection and above all channeling this in a true way.

I've also got to give a big mention to one of my DJ mentors Dick Coombes who originally was one of the Northern Soul scene founders in the UK's Southend and came to Ireland in the early nineties setting up and running alternative dance nights – he taught me to fully listen to my records and the value of seeking the unexpected track which you might initially miss on a bside or by skipping through! Also a special mention to my fiancée Judith who is a devout 4AD fan! She has always taught me to listen in a different way bringing my attentions to individual sounds in tracks that may not be the most obvious leads or hooks but maybe some background sound or a liquid like sound hidden under a layer or bass? – these sounds can turn out to be the actual hooks you connect to somehow without even consciously hearing them !

Today I am still completely influenced by electronic music in the same way as hearing it in the early days! I get the same initial buzz and goosebumps on hearing great Techno especially ;) – the one big difference for me today is I listen a little more with a discerning DJ ear and listen more intently to the production aesthetics to hear and feel what the tracks could work like in a club! luckily enough this is more enjoyable in some ways today as this is where the music has progressed and advanced through the actual production and the newer sonic tools used today.

- What's your favourite festival/place ?

My all time favourite place for techno music, club, people, space and actual sound has got to be the Subclub in Bratislava formerly known as the Uclub! From experiencing dancing in there, hearing the residents DJ in there, meeting the guys who set it up and witness their love and passion for it, for me it is the ultimate techno club and anyone who has experienced walking in to the club through the bunker tunnel will know exactly what I mean!

- What's coming next ?

With techno and especially the slightly heavier and darker sound experiencing a bit of a cool revival? at the moment it means I am playing a bit more which is great as I have a few nice gigs booked in for 2015 already so hopefully it will be a busy year DJing!
Very recently I finally got around to setting up an actual working studio with a very good friend of mine and have already started some initial tracks – finally I hope to put out some solo releases and it also looks like the second Tricaustic record is in the pipeline for 2015 !!

Jon Hussey is DJing since the early nineties, kick-starting at the infamous Planet Dub night in Dublin!
Over the years Jon has promoted and resided at a number of Techno clubs throughout Ireland as well as playing in many Techno havens around Europe including London, Bratislava, Berlin, Leeds and Turin.

In '99 Jon was among the first group from Ireland to qualify for the Red Bull Music Academy which was held in Berlin where he met many like minded Techno artists helping to fuel his passion further.

During his time DJing Jon has been lucky enough to play alongside many of his all time favourite artists from Biosphere & Plaid to Surgeon, Joey Beltram, Steve Bicknell, Ancient Methods, Loktibrada, Rumenige, Neil Landstrumm, Reeko, DJ Boss, Bas Mooy, Oscar Mulero, Jerome Hill & AnD, playing in infamous Techno clubs like Tresor in Berlin and the Subclub in Bratislava!!

- What are your main influences ?

To answer this I've got to go back to my earliest Influences as even today I am still drawn while listening / dancing to the same elements, sounds and textures I was from the early blueprints of experimental and electronic music that I was exposed to !

Early influences electronic music wise would be New Order (I have very fond memories of buying Substance on cassette and playing it to death!). I also have very vivid memories of listening to Tangerine Dream for pure mesmerising late night trance music way before Eye Q Records ;) Around this curious time when alternative, indie, electronic, experimental and early house and techno seemed to be swelling from the same creative realms I was also listening to acts like Spacemen 3, AR Kane, Front242, Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, which all fused varying electronic and experimental elements together. The BBC alternative music show Snub TV at this time was for me a vision and window into these artists and other music worlds – (http://snub.tv/about-snub-tv/)

Equally then I was attracted to atmospheric ambient sounds as much as the hyped drum machine driven side of electronic music. Aphex's first ambient works, the Orbs adventures beyond the Ultraworld and the KLF's Chillout album were soundtracks of my life for at least 2 years! These brought me deeper to discover the magic of Brian Eno, Biosphere and early IDM acts like Seefeel who morphed beautifully into the effervescent noise of My Bloody Valentine as background bliss !

Labels wise early on the likes of WARP, R&S, XL Recordings and my all time favourite from the genius of Casper Pound - Rising High Records were blowing my mind! Acts with strange Technological sci-fi names like LFO, Nexus 21, EON, GTO, Model 500, Orbital were filling the record shops, pirate radio stations and it really felt like a takeover movement. Standout moments of tracks with unmistakable sounds for me were Beltrams 'Energy Flash' – hearing this at a Banba Rave in Cork on a loud system and being completely immersed watching the crowd lift off like a pow wow on steroids was completely unreal. Hearing LFO's 'LFO' had a very similar impact yet even more surreal and stark – almost like been hit with a jolt of futuristic uneasiness. Another real stand out track at this early time that stopped me in completely my tracks when I heard it first from a mixtape a friend had brought home from London in 1990 was EON's 'Spice' with it's samples from the David Lynch movie 'Dune' and the crazy analog staccato bleeps it sounded like it was arriving from the Red Planet!

My weekly underground dose around this time was received at the infamous Dublin club SIDES from the brilliant resident DJ's Liam Dollard, Pat Hyland, Johnny Moy and David Holmes! Also swapping / borrowing and sourcing;) much coveted mixtapes from the club at the time which were like Gold dust! On the DJ side of this early inspiration seeing Andrew Weatherall from the 'Sabres of Paradise' fame mix an build intense psychedelic mayhem while blending tracks was mindblowing – this completely exposed me to the possibility of creating chemistry while DJing based on perfect timing, mixing, track selection and above all channeling this in a true way.

I've also got to give a big mention to one of my DJ mentors Dick Coombes who originally was one of the Northern Soul scene founders in the UK's Southend and came to Ireland in the early nineties setting up and running alternative dance nights – he taught me to fully listen to my records and the value of seeking the unexpected track which you might initially miss on a bside or by skipping through! Also a special mention to my fiancée Judith who is a devout 4AD fan! She has always taught me to listen in a different way bringing my attentions to individual sounds in tracks that may not be the most obvious leads or hooks but maybe some background sound or a liquid like sound hidden under a layer or bass? – these sounds can turn out to be the actual hooks you connect to somehow without even consciously hearing them !

Today I am still completely influenced by electronic music in the same way as hearing it in the early days! I get the same initial buzz and goosebumps on hearing great Techno especially ;) – the one big difference for me today is I listen a little more with a discerning DJ ear and listen more intently to the production aesthetics to hear and feel what the tracks could work like in a club! luckily enough this is more enjoyable in some ways today as this is where the music has progressed and advanced through the actual production and the newer sonic tools used today.

- What's your favourite festival/place ?

My all time favourite place for techno music, club, people, space and actual sound has got to be the Subclub in Bratislava formerly known as the Uclub! From experiencing dancing in there, hearing the residents DJ in there, meeting the guys who set it up and witness their love and passion for it, for me it is the ultimate techno club and anyone who has experienced walking in to the club through the bunker tunnel will know exactly what I mean!

- What's coming next ?

With techno and especially the slightly heavier and darker sound experiencing a bit of a cool revival? at the moment it means I am playing a bit more which is great as I have a few nice gigs booked in for 2015 already so hopefully it will be a busy year DJing!
Very recently I finally got around to setting up an actual working studio with a very good friend of mine and have already started some initial tracks – finally I hope to put out some solo releases and it also looks like the second Tricaustic record is in the pipeline for 2015 !!

Q:
What comes more natural to you DJing or producing?

A:
Definitely DJing! Its definitely my more natural state:) production is something I am still very much working on and I've had to invest a lot more time and energy into technique, theory and the actual production process – with production it definitely takes a dedicated body of time before you can create freely.

Q:
Tell us about your most memorable gig so far.

A:
One that comes to mind is playing the last ever slot at McGruders in Dublin on St.Patricks night 2009 for the intensity and atmosphere, it was a very special venue as it had a real diverse crowd and showcased many abstract music and artistic styles under one roof in a true DIY way. Q:
In the techno scene today you mostly hear about artists and productions (no critique), but what about the good Djs? What is your opinion?

A:
It was Djs who inspired me the most over the years playing great artists music in unique contexts, mixing tracks to form new chemistries. On searching for those tracks later I began to realise it was so much more than the track itself!
(often being slightly disappointed when finding the track realising it was only part of the greater set – usually a lot of the tracks that did stand out for me also turned out to be B-sides and not the main tracks!)

It was the extra things like the subtleties of the long deep lingering mixed track in the background fading slowly into the noise abyss, the precise time the track was played to spark the perfect energy, how fast / slow it was played, what section of the track was played? All of which combined with the listening and dancing experience. Another element that I feel is really important to mention is the actual energy / feeling behind the the track been played i.e. If someone is playing a track they truly love that will transmit and translate to add another element or intangible layer!

I've had some amazing experiences from the dancefloor when all of these elements are present - some examples that stand out for me in the early days where Andrew Weatherall merging tracks and styles together in experimental ways, mixing tracks on off beats dropping them in 'wrong' places creating the unexpected, very cerebral and almost psychedelic mind blowing experiences. Another for different and obvious reasons would have been Jeff Mills for the sheer energy intensity of how he plays for both body and mind – pure and raw Techno power! I also experienced very similar to this when visiting Slovakia for the first time at the end of the nineties with Djs like Loktibrada and Toky who harnessed this style to the limit layering broken rhythm tracks with unreal pace, intensity and precision.

Today it has become more and more about the producer and not the Dj, to the point that I do think the DJing art has been diluted and almost standardised in a way, other than the old reliables there seems to be little appetite or platform for upcoming talented Djs hence not many of them actually take risks or push boundaries in the way of old.

There is also some amazing producers at the minute who simply are not good Djs and it's become a norm by some promoters to automatically give them the platform to Dj or to perform in a Dj style (also it's a much cheaper way of booking an artist to play) with many actually been billed as 'live' because they fit a few of their own tracks into their Dj sets? This to me is a strange concept and falls short as a true live performance, I come from an era when live meant Live with acts like Orbital and Leftfield!!
DJing and live for me have always been two very different performance energies that have completely different feels on a dancefloor and it has been Djs that have put many artists on my radar leading me to seek their live performances!

Q:
Where should you go to experience good techno music in Dublin?

A:
The best nights over the past year or so have been the Network gigs happening once every couple of months on a larger scale featuring a great cross range of artists (kind of like mini one day Techno festivals!). Smaller once a month nights like Free Techno and Vision Collector who are giving a platform for some amazing homegrown talent are great ones to watch out for and also the consistent weekly promoters Subject, Surge and Bodytonic who are putting on quality weekly House & Techno nights with international guests in venues like the Twisted Pepper and The Grand Social are well worth checking.

Q:
What are your future plans production wise?

A:
Over the past 2 years I've invested in some hardware, mostly older analogue synths and drum machines from the eighties! I'm really enjoying creating music in this way with machines as compared to fully digital in the past, it's a tactile kinesthetic process just like DJing feeling more like a jam that you can control, manipulate and groove to – this way of working definitely fits me better!

On the release front I'm currently working on a completing a release for one of my favourite labels which will be a long overdue debut solo release from me, it will be an interesting chapter for me and even more interesting to see where it may lead me in the DJing sphere...
