In the 3 years since the 1st Brass Wires & Bass album, DJ Delay has played widely across Europe, and made a few tours in Canada, Australia and the US. Highlights along the way were the Fusion (DE), Glastonbury (UK) and Exit (RS) festivals. Now it’s only fitting that the works on this second collection of remixes travel beyond Eastern Europe to include the cream of global music groups & producers. Most of the tracks were well tested & celebrated during this time by audiences across the planet.

From his Berlin studio to the rest of the world, these 13 gems take in roots music from Hungary, France, Romania, Yemen, Russia, Italy & Indonesia. There’s plenty of bass, solid dubbing, dextrous sonic manipulation, and dancefloor attractors within. All done with care in Delay’s inimitable & playful style.

Anakronik Electro Orkestra’s “Terk In America” marries dub and ska beautifully with a bass heavy and upful version with surprising twists and turns, while Watcha Clan’s beautiful version of “Im Nin’Alu” gets a full percussive future dubstep workout. Right after, the Dolomites receive a driving 8 bit bounce for their wonderful accordion rich “Queen Of The Game”. In the Berlin corner Rotfront get new sinewave-ska boots for “Sigaretta” while Stefano Miele’s “Ninna Nanna” is dubbed into outer space. Jallabanda’s version of “Czardas” swings into a Turkish night club and the Skazka Orchestra received a total club reconstruction, adding helium filled vocals to their Russian children’s tune “More”. DJ Delay himself takes a Bavarian drinking tongue twister - transporting it to a Berlin after-hours tech house party. Ever heard of Balkan / Samba bateria? Uzgin Uver and Balkan Mashina get forceful percussive Brazillian future bass workouts with plenty of bounce. DJ Click’s Doctor is a little more subtel, receiving a dancehall steppers treatment - nicely slicing, dicing and dubbing Killo Killo’s vocals. There’s a gentle wind down towards the end of the album with the second Uzgin Uver selection lounging on the sofa in a dirtier Vienna-K&D style. Winding up proceedings with Filastine’s version of “Gendjer Gendjer” – with a politically charged history, exquisitely sung by Nova, we’re treated to an epic orchestral bass soundtrack rework - complete with full choir, string and percussion sections.

(short review - English)
„The tracks tell colourful tales, with arrangements full of surprises that make you smile. I love it when someone makes music with humour and has the ability to quote from several different genres with as much expertise as DJ Delay. It reminds me of children playing & of a well told joke - something which many of todays producers have lost the ability to do.“ [ dunkelbunt ] on Brass Wires & Bass 2, March 2013
This is a project, which invited 9 different artists to interpret the Čačak Kolo (Serbia) in the context of their current musical direction.

Čačak kolo is the name of many Shope type dances found in Eastern Serbia, Northeastern Macedonia, and Western Bulgaria. They are characterized by their fast 2/4 metered music. Čačak dances are often referred to by the town or region from which they come.

Whilst this traditional tune is well known to anyone from the former Yugoslavia, this has not been a part of the handful of tunes, which have been remixed and re- presented in the last 10 years.

FLeCK, Joro Boro and Gypsy Syndicate give burning Dubstep remixes, with killer club tunes from DJ Superstereo, Unsoundboy, Gypsy Syndicate and DJ Delay. Tricky D stands tall with a Cumbia dub version, Curse Ov Dialect show their abstract Hiphop skills and Benjamin Skepper bows in with a tense Contemporary Classical piece.

This release shows how far traditional music can be taken beyond standard club fare. A must for all lovers of traditional and upful club music!

A mix of all Beyond The Kolo tracks skillfully blended by the Gipsy Syndicate.
*** Individual tracks available in all good online stores now!

Mix tracklist:
-----------
01. Intro
02. Benjamin Skepper - Doro Odori
03. Unsoundbwoy - Bottom Shelf Kolo
04. FLeCK - Musala
05. Gipsy Syndicate - Kolo Of Dub
06. DJ Superstereo - Electric Kolo
07. Joro Boro - Playa Kolo
08. DJ delay - Chchchachack
09. Tricky D - Mrzim Narodnjake
10. Curse Ov Dialect - Diamond Kolo
11. Gipsy Syndicate - Kolo Of Movement
----------

Artists’ Statements
----------------

FLeCK
I decided to name the tune "Musala" which is the highest mountain peak of the Balkans! From such a high position you can see the whole earth metaphorically speaking, as the project is transnational!

Tricky D
Mrzim Narodnjake (I Hate Folk): Growing up in Yugoslavia (I left the country b4 the bloody separation) we were surrounded and overloaded with plenty of bad folk versions. When Dj Delay gave me "Kolo" to remix i though: "oh no , that tune again"...reawakening the feelings i used to have towards folk music as a young punk rocker . So i had 2 choices: not to do a remix or destroy and squeeze the sample and do something different out of it. Hence the title: I Hate Folk

DJ Superstereo
I was inspired to make the track this way by the disco of the 90's (for example the vocals) and the modern kuduro-balkan-ghetto-tech (bass and rhythms). I feel it is completely a SuperStereo-track in its sounding, although it is my first creation in kolo style.

Unsoundboy
After listening to the horns i decided i wanted to do something a bit slower and bit less urgent, so i went in search of some sheet music, found a piano and clarinet arrangement in a book on the bottom shelf of the office, noted some chords and some of the clarinet hooks then set about pulling them apart and dirtying it all up over a heavy bass and some scatty breaks.

DJ Delay
When I first heard this Kolo it reminded me of the energy of jump-up ragga jungle, which led me to Chchchachak.

Gipsy Syndicate
Send a group of music nerds to east Europe with lots of electronic equipment inclusive slivovitz and the dancfloor will be to the biggest balkandisco! At this time the Gipsy Syndicate have done two remixes for Beaming Productions. The basic was a relly nice trumpet loop which inspired us to do something crazy. A bottle of slivovitz, a long night and two tracks was the result. The final score is a slow Dub version and a fast Breakcore tune. Call it Balkanrave!

Curse Ov Dialect
I juxtaposed the dopeness of the kolo’s focus in order to create a musical hiphop locust!! Sounds that mixed together to create harmony.

Benjamin Skepper
I Deconstructed the harmonic structure of the Kolo, and developed the idea of the diminished minor seventh inherent in the Kolo melody. "Doro Odori" is written for 5 violoncellos and features a driving bass rhythm with textural melodic patterns to create an orchestral and instrumental body of sound.

Joro Boro
Conceived on the dancefloors of Berlin and Melbourne, birthed in the studios of Argentina, Budapest and Belgrade and raised through a Berlin studio filled with, well, brass, wires and bass, this is a remix album like no other that plumbs the depths and traditions of Eastern European music styles.

Brass, Wires & Bass is the new offering from DJ Delay, featuring remixes of some of the finest Balkan music has to offer. Tweaking, fiddling, pushing the parameters and genre defying sonical touches all combine to give an imprint of what these music forms can sound like when taken to the limit.

Viajante by Tremor has a drunken bass sound mixed with a cumbia soundscape. Ya Piv by Rotfront has their perfect klezmerton nailed to the dancefloor and Max Pashm’s Klezmernaki receives a taut percussive reworking with the original noise guitar riff. La Cherga get more than they bargain for with echo, delay and note stretching and bending on Down Domination Part 2, Gaetano Fabri has house & broken beat thrown in his mix of Smart Gypsy (which also appears on Gaetano Fabri's 'Smart Gypsy' EP), Municipale Balcanica has a minimalist and futuristic workover on Carovana and Boban i Marko Marković Orkestar is stripped right back and reassembled on Voz. Dunkelbunt and Vardos both receive bonus flavour crystals and it is on UHT° Sex, Dub, Jazz n Roll that takes us to the depths of dub. Mastered by electronic maestro Jammin’ Unit and with elegant cover art by Penny Metal, the album is a complete snapshot of the current Balkan scene and of it's possibilities.
DJ Delay aka Beam Up aka Sonical are the monikers and aliases that Brian May works under, exploring the different facets of sound and sound design that have seen him releasing tracks since 1999. From the outdoor trance scene in Australia of Earthcore, Rainbow Serpent and Submerge Chill Festival to supporting the likes of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, African Headcharge, DJ Spooky and The Evolution Control Committee amongst many, many others, Brian has consistently challenged musical notions, dub reasonings and event management and curation. As a radio host he steered the mothership of “Into the Groovy” on PBSFM from 1990-2002 and now produces and presents the show of the same name on www.straightup.com.au In Melbourne he co-curated Australia's first regular Balkan night at Horse Bazaar ‘05-‘08 The Good, The Bad and the Balkan as well as Forward the Bass (dub), Loony Tunes (Animation) Steel Drum (Dub & related) and Living Version (Roots reggae, dub and wider) between ’98 and ‘08.

Brand new EP from DJ Delay: MIDI East

Since the release of the critically acclaimed “Brass Wires & Bass” album, DJ Delay has been busy performing around the globe and über productive in the studio. Playing shows from Australia to America, including the Glastonbury, Exit and Fusion festivals has provided plenty of inspiration for his sonic laboratory. In addition he’s remixed over a dozen world wide bass artists . Just in time for the 2012 Summer season, Beaming Productions is totally chuffed to present the MIDI East EP.

To the music – 4 deep and layered tracks, which delve into some of the music of Eastern Europe and Western Asia, disregarding visa controlled borders. Instead of audio tourism and simple phrase looping there’s thoughtful re-treading of solid melody. The focus is also not on homage to icons of the past via sampling, but on building the tracks from the ground up via soft synths and live recording. For this EP, 2 of the tracks have been blessed with the excellent ‘bouzoucaster’ (custom built hybrid fender guitar/bouzouki) & Qarqabeb playing of Berlin musician Shazam (Piranha records).

Tracks in brief:

1. Baga Cumbia is velvety cumbia with a Turkish twist - complete with burning drum and bass.
2. Ustunde mixes Turkish lines with Chinese Zither into an outdoor Berlin tech house track.
3. Xopo mashes an angular 11/16 Tallava bassline with deep house.
4. Maricensko takes Bulgarian flavours headlong into deep, epic, heavy dubstep territory.

Each of the four are brilliantly polished & well tested on the dancefloors of the EU and North America in the early part of 2012.
Mastering magic by Jammin’ Masters and artwork by Metalanguage Design.
BEAM06 MIDI East EP: Out June 12, 2012 in many good digital stores.
For interviews promo CDs & hi res images please get in touch via the contact details below.

- What's The Project?

MIDI east is:
--- a MIDI pack of East-Euro/West Asian music
--- an open Soundcloud group
--- a digital/other format EP release for DJ Delay
--- an open-to-everyone project

all rolled into one.

The idea is to focus attention away from audio-sampling (for a while at least) and onto feeding all those softsynths lurking on your computer with rich&raw MIDI .
Almost all the music within comes from the Balkans/Turkey - there's some pretty wild stuff in there... and a good dose of fromage too.
DJ Delay has made some interpretations from these files & a preview of 4 tracks are here.....

So, what happens is....
- You get the big ole bunch of midi files to play with...
- If you wish to do so, put the resulting track(s) in the soundcloud group made for the project (it will grow...and grow....)
- DJ Delay releases his versions and other producers do the same however they choose.

- What's in the MIDI pack?
Over 9000 midi files covering mainly Turkish/Middle Eastern tunes, with some Balkan, Greek and (1 or 2) Tango are there in the pack.
(OK...Tango is neither East Euro or West Asian...but it's in the pack so what the heck!)

- How to use them?
.....entirely up to you... of course. The MIDI data is a combination of live playing and machine-sequenced.
As the live parts have occasional fluffed notes/timing shifts etc.... they sound more natural and any real bloopers just get edited..or not...
Drop the midi file into your DAW of choice...Logic, Protools, Cubase etc.
Note: Ableton live does not handle multi-channel MIDI files (as far as I know). You will get all channels mixed into one - not a lot of fun!
For Ableton - you must first use cubase/cakewalk/protools/logic etc to extract the different MIDI channel instrument notes&info.

Many of the tunes are traditional, but some are published, so check it out if you intend to commercially release your creation - search engines are your friend here.
MIDI files can be previewed on a Mac simply in the Finder and on Windows machines using Windows Media Player.

- Where is the Soundcloud group?
soundcloud.com/groups/midi-east
When you upload a track you made to the Soundcloud group, it would be good to put the original MIDI file name in the description, but that's up to you.

- Where are the MIDI files?
They'll be released the same time as the EP, but if you're mad keen now, get in touch...

Just to be 100% sure - this is no competition or invitation to be part of a 'traditional' release....
IT IS an invitation to use a really great resource and let your imagination run and put the results in 1 central place - the Soundcloud group.
What you do with the track(s) in the end ...is up to you!

Thanks for reading.....looking forward to listening......

<itunes:summary>Brand new EP from DJ Delay: MIDI East
