The start of this little mini series is my way of easing myself back into DJing after a very long break. In Good For The Soul, I'm seeking out pure "positive mindset trance" - sets entirely, and specifically, built around bright, sunny, utopian melodies. Sure to give a real uplift.
With so many timeless prog classics out there, the Definitive project desperately needed a more progressive angle on things and efforts to create something in that vein gradually developed into one of clearest overall themes of the series. Picture a long coastal walk in the dark of night, not a soul around. As the sun creeps, the mood changes with the growing light. The walk ends with the sun high in the sky down on the beach. This set is the reflective calm and melancholy that gently gives way to the hope of a new day. There’s material from Probspot, Perry O'Neil, Armin van Buuren and Hans Zimmer via Airbase and Jan Gustafsson.

After very close to a year away, along comes the Definitive episode that looked like it might never happen. This one was drafted and redrafted about 3 or 4 times and I was never quite sure whether I was happy with it. Life took over and the opportunity to add it to the canon vanished. But with new projects finally coming to fruition, I needed something to banish the cobwebs of being away from any kind of DJing for so damn long. Despite my original misgivings about the tracklist and the fact that it’s maybe a little too full on in the first 20 minutes, it’s ended up with quite a lot going for it and it more than stands up to previous editions. This is unashamedly the tech trance edition: a fitting prelude to the ambitious (mostly non-trance) projects to come. Cor Fijneman, Ummet Ozcan, Sander van Doorn and The Green Martian all feature, as do some personal Syndicate memories.

Definitive - Sunshine & Solace
After giving things a little break in July, I’m back with another Definitive for August, and this seventh set in the series will be the last one for 2018. Thematically, Sunshine & Solace sits somewhere in between Soulful Euphoria and A Message About The Universe. The first hour or so has that bright, old-Anjuna feel - warm and sundrenched. Whereas the middle section has a slightly moodier/tech trance edge giving that cosmological, sci-fi feel. This set captures quite nicely that central trance dichotomy of primeval sun worship versus technological modernity.

‘Light’ has always been a big theme in trance music and it’s not hard to see from looking down the tracklist that this theme is strongly represented in the track titles themselves. But even beyond the track titles, there are many melodies in this one that convey various shades and forms of light - a warm sunshine, a sunrise, a hazy dusk, a gentle twilight, an instantaneous luminous envelopment, a transcendental sunburst… The set also includes DJ Eco’s A Light At The End which I played in my final set for Transcend in April. I played it purely for myself, largely for very sentimental reasons. It got a level of positive reaction that I really wasn’t expecting at all. The name, A Vision Of Light, as well as being a straight-forward reference to an obvious motif based on light, is also a reference to the little voice snippet contained within the closing chillout track.

This month’s Definitive is another edition of this little series that, a bit like The Imperfect Horizon, might not have the most obvious theme. Stylistically, it probably contains the widest variety of different sounds - from delicate melodic pads, to rasping tribal drums, moody tech and a trance/hard trance crossover sound that doesn’t truly appear in any of the other sets. And it segways between all these styles pretty quickly without being too jarring. A lot packed into this one, including favourites from Alt+F4, Pulser, Jonas Steur, Sander Van Doorn as Sam Sharp and Dave 202.

March's Definitive, The Imperfect Horizon, is a ‘tipping of the hat’ to artistic imperfection. Musically, what I really like about this mix, is that it contains a lot of the spirit and, for want of a better phrase, “the fingerprints” of the original The Phil-Harmonic Classics episode on which this whole series is based - at least, much more so than most of the other sets I’ve posted so far. It has a sort of blissful, warm and slightly mellow beginning and end, with a more euphoric, energetic peak around its midpoint onwards - this creates a vague emotional symmetry. There’s material from John O'Callaghan, Onova, Marcos, Ronski Speed, Alphazone and, once again, Ronald van den Beuken, this time as The Mystery.

Even though I worked on this one during the most difficult period of my 2017, I didn’t compile the tracklist with the intention to inspire any particular emotion.
