<itunes:summary><![CDATA[Thando Hlwaya, affectionately known as Pono T, is a vibrant and jovial DJ whose specialty is Afrotech, with an experience that spans over a decade! He was born and bred in Khayelitsha, some 27-years-ago, and it’s his humble beginnings that constantly make him seek a better version of himself as both a person and DJ.
Over the years, Pono T has acquired enough experience, tools and knowledge to understand what the patrons would expect from a DJ who plays at an affluent, well-respected and resourceful venue such as Kwa Ace. His ability to gauge and engage with the crowd makes him the favorite DJ that people always look forward to being served by. He is ‘serving’ because he understands that music touches people in different ways so his music needs to sail from the ear to serve the person’s soul. For his bragging rights, his skills were thoroughly honed when he was a resident DJ at Club 24 in 2011, before moving to Solly’s Pub in 2012.
“But my biggest highlight was probably when I played at Emaplangeni Lounge in 2014 alongside heavyweights such as DJ Tira, Professor, Vetkoek vs Mahoota, Da Capo and Distruction Boyz among others,” says the jolly DJ. Pono-T has also had a stint with Radio Khaltsha and has been invited by various places over the years as a guest DJ, meeting different people with different music taste buds. This crowd variety he’s been exposed to certify and cements him as the man who would know what to play regardless of the crowd he was standing in front of.
“Playing at these venues has helped me to shift my mindset from seeing music as ‘just art practice’ to art business. Sharing a stage with big names has inspired me to work hard in growing my brand as an artist so I can also reach my pinnacle,” says Pono T. He does acknowledge the talent that floods the Cape Town music scene but constantly looks at ways to reestablish and redefine his brand to adjust to the times.
“What makes me different from other DJs is my passion for Afrotech music! I have a great work ethic because I take this as a career and not just as a hobby. I eat, breathe and live music hence I’m able to connect with people listening to my set. Playing at Kwa Ace for Pono T would give him a chance to finally dish the pot he’s been cooking for over ten years and there isn’t a better platform to do this. Pono T’s philosophy is that there’s always something to learn and this enables him to have a teachable spirit despite his wealth of experience as a DJ.
“This opportunity would help me grow and establish my brand to its full potential while also learning about the music business,” concludes the Afrotech DJ.]]></itunes:summary>
