<itunes:summary>Let us take you back to a time when vinyl was king. To a time when every dj couldn’t have every track at their fingertips by quickly browsing the internet. A time without Bandcamp, Traxsource or Beatport. It was a time when djs played at house parties, warehouses, abandoned banks ;), or out on the seaside with a generator. Those djs took pride in introducing the dance floor to new records.
David Behnken and his friends threw some of those parties. Over the years he has collected or tirelessly recorded mixtapes from his favorite djs, some live at events, some recording in his living room or bedroom on the 1’s and 2’s. You know the tapes, the ones that we used to buy at indie records stores and spots on Haight or Telegraph. He sought out some rare and unreleased gems and kept those home recordings.
For years he saved them and recently decided to employ the services and skills of San Francisco's analog-to-digital wizard; the founder, curator, and remastering technician of SF’s Disco Preservation Society, Mr. Jim Hopkins.
Living up to his mission statement, Jim saved many of these mixed tapes and live recordings of the parties from the brink of silence. Some of which needed to be re-spliced after being torn apart by countless plays and being almost three decades old. However, many of these old mixes aged like fine wine. What we hope you’ll find truly undeniable is the level of sound quality Jim’s remastering has brought to these old tapes.
This is another step toward recapturing and sharing the sounds of that era, that epoch in time that was so special and important to so many of us. Back then, djs spent hours digging for records, we made music, danced together and forged friendships and partnerships. We bonded with all types of people from all different backgrounds and cities. It seemed like a simpler time. There was a mutual respect for one another and for the power of music and the dance floor. If you’re like me, you miss a lot of these moments, the connections and of course the songs.
We hope this will help bring some of the memories back, to move your feet again and remind your heart. Share with someone who might enjoy these or even better with someone who was there and might have some memories to share.
David will be dropping new mixes regularly to get these dusty old gems out to you. Let us know if we should add anyone to the email list and be sure to follow ”Good Life” so you’ll know when mixes are up and can re-listen and download the ones that move you.

Just love these two live sets from DJs Joaquin and Tasho on December 20, 1997. I’ll admit the recording of Joaquin’s set is not the best quality, but his mix is one of my favorite live sets of his. Tasho closed out the party with his set. One if not the most favorite set of Tasho’s that I had the opportunity to rock out too on the dance floor. You really just can’t f* with this mix. Not in the slightest in any way except on that m* f* dance floor!

Sunshine Daydream was a daytime party I helped Ramiro and friends organized at VSF in San Francisco during the late 90s.
Great times had by all despite the heavy rains. DJs Brooks, Joaquin, and the indelible dynamic duo of the 90’s SF music scene - Tasho & Jonene - truly brought a wonderful variety of music that night, raising our spirits as well as that roof!
For the record, that was my copy of Curtis Mayfield - Roots played on tape 4. Found it for 20 cents at a garage sale round the corner a few weeks before this party.
Hope you all enjoy these fun vinyl mixes. cheers!

Let us take you back to a time when vinyl was king.
Yours Truly,
Joaquin and David

Yours Truly,
Joaquin and David</googleplay:description>

Ache’(ah-shay) was a musically eclectic party I threw with friends in downtown San Francisco for some years, primarily at the old Beale Street Bar and Grill in downtown SF, between 2000 and 2005. House music was at our core, but we mixed it up a bit with djs playing breaks, funk, hip hop, downtempo. The venue layout allowed for us to have multiple stages, so we also included live hip-hop, funk, drum & bass, rockabilly, spoken word, poetry, and even comedy. Beautiful friend’s of many talents performed, displayed art, and also prepared tons of incredibly delicious foods for these potluck events.

Here is one of my favorite live sets from DJ Joaquin Garcia. He was then and is still my top choice music selector. Especially house music. I certainly hope you enjoy this set as much as I and everyone else did on that smokin' hot dance floor. This is one of those recordings where you can hear us all in the background -enjoying the hell out of ourselves- groovin out to this lowdown motivating live house music set.

Urban Arcana was our third invite party. After the first two E-Tickets, we had outgrown the Stevenson alley wearhouse in downtown SF. Amazingly, John had sold the Hamm's Brewing corporate building some story that he and his lady needed a space for an anniversary party, and was hoping their penthouse was available for late night reception. But then at the last minute, one of our resident DJs was unable to play records or provide the sound system that night. Luckily for us someone had recommended a DJ named Galen. He more than completed the roster that night by providing the sound system and DJing (two absolutely rockin sets) with our residents Carlos and Simon. I have to say this night was one of my favourite sets ever thrown down by Carlos! The magic went all night at Urban Arcana, but the needle on the records couldn’t take the pressure and broke just as Simon began his closing set. This is why his set is not represented here, and for his guest journal entry that night, "Amazing party, dud needle". All in all we threw a real banger that night with a wonderful view of all downtown SF. You could see happiness everywhere, in the eyes and the light of all who attended.

Digitization and remastering of the tape was provided by Jim Hopkins - Disco Preservation Society - SF. Flyer art provided by Shawn Hanna.
