V1:
The desert road unwinds before me as radio static signals the end of another small town. There are stars out here that have never seen the suburbs and I find myself searching for a wish to make on one as it falls. Content with what I’m unable to find, I ease up on the accelerator for the first time in miles. My whole body feels lighter here. It’s like the release of tension only noticed in it’s absence. I smile and lean back into the accelerator, because after all, it still feels good to go fast.
Sung:
Everynight it’s the same dream
Your hands all over me
I can’t get you outta my head
You’re under my skin
(You’re under my skin)
V2
Coal stacks burning low on the horizon conjure up familiar urges. I always say I’m going to quit. But undeterred, a new last-pack finds it’s way into my purse. Taking a long drag, I notice scratches on my hands. I can’t place them but I don’t care to either. I probably tripped somewhere... I must have. The sign ahead says its two hundred and thirty seven miles to the state line. I’ll need to stop for gas soon, and maybe cigarettes.
Sung:
Everynight it’s the same dream
Your hands all over me
I can’t get you outta my head
You’re under my skin
(You’re under my skin)
V3
I’m restlessly flipping through the static when something catches my ear. The police are looking for a woman driving a car much like mine. They say that an assailant was found dead in her home with clear signs of a struggle, but she’s been missing for days. I nod in agreement with the host, “her family must be worried sick.” Pausing for a brief moment before moving on. I find a classic rock station between all the commercials and evangelists. I’ve always thought that comfort sounded something like The Beatles.
Sung:
Everynight it’s the same dream
Your hands all over me
I can’t get you outta my head
You’re under my skin
(You’re under my skin)
