Welcome to the Cookie-Dough Guest mix where we invite some of favourite DJ / Producers to answer a few questions and dig deep into their collections and put together a mix of their favourite records.
For this episode we have invited Manchester DJ and production collective 2 Billion Beats to spin some of the records that have influenced them over the years.
Their recent releases on Paper Recordings have had us getting our Nu-Disco groove on at Cookie-Dough HQ!

Tracklist

1. Chemical Brothers – Lost in the K hole
   The choice track from Dig Your Own Hole, and something I only really discovered after a few listens, because it’s laid back vibe is juxtaposed with all the obvious big bangers on there! The Chems have always held a special place in my heart, they were my first electronic music loves.

2. Ralph Myerz and the Jack Herron band – Think Twice
   Saw these chaps at Glasto in 2004 – they were first on the main stage. Was blown away with their live show, again, I was just getting into electronic music at this time. Bought this album immediately and there isn’t a bad track on there!

3. Sebastian Tellier – Kilometer (Aeroplane remix)
   This has been a staple in our sets for a good while now. We just love the synth work in this, and it’s probably one of the first tracks we put in the bag that had that low slung chuggy tempo compared with the other house music we had. For some reason the drop makes us think of Greensleeves!

4. Holy Ghost! – Hold On
   We used to rinse DFA tunes in our sets! When we came across this tune, we loved the mix of electronics and band vibes – it could fit into a club set or be listened to at home – and it’s something we try and get across in our own music. Holy Ghost are also big analog heads… men after our own hearts!

5. Krafty Kuts – Ill Type Sound
   Before we were disco heads, we were b-boys (sort of). Our first love was breakbeat… there I said it! Anything with a broken beat, dnb, breaks, hip-hop, we only seriously got into 4 to the floor stuff laters on. You just can’t fail to love the funk of this track, some might consider it cheesy, but sod ’em, this is straight up fun. Not so much now, but when we were cutting our teeth with residencies around Manchester, this was a regular party starter.

6. Chic – I Want Your Love (Todd Terje edit)
   Nile Rogers is a big influence and hero for both of us. Personally, I’ve got more in to this sort of stuff as I get older – I’m less into though provoking, chin-stroky-for-the-sake-of-it music, and more into simple, happy, melodically pleasing tunage, of which Chic is the epitome. That being said, the origins of disco has it’s dark side, but I love that the music itself on a superficial level shows no sign of this – a turn the other cheek 2 fingers up to the establishment!

7. 2 Billion Beats – Noise In Your Eye
   One of our own which has gone down a treat whenever we’ve snuck it in to a set. Based around a beaut of a sample from an old Jan Hammer record, hope you like it!

8. Moodymann – I’m Doing Fine
   This is the record which promoted the birth of 2 Billion Beats! On our first track ‘The Moodymann’ we tried to mirror some of the incredible drum shuffle in this track. Just love the schizophrenic nature of Moodymann’s stuff.

9. Neurotic Drum Band – Robotic Hypnotic Adventure
   First heard this on one of our best mate’s stag do in Munich, very good memories! Sometimes you just need straight up simple strong chords played on a piano. Does the business time and time again in our sets.

10. Lindstrom – The Contemporary Fix
    This used to be a favourite at the long-running and much loved night, Aficionados in Manchester. Also great memories cruising round with this on, on the way to gigs and practices. It’s totally ridiculous, almost like a shared joke between Col and I. On th odd occasion where we’re playing somewhere suitable to drop it, 1/2 the room love it and the other half don’t know what the hell just happened.

11. Salt City Orchestra – Theme From Salt City Orchestra
    Before we signed music to Paper, we were big fans anyway – this is one of our choice cuts from the early days before they re-invented themselves in the late 2010’s. Big basement house tune with an irresistible numb square bass, never get tired of this one.

12. Still Going – Still Going Theme
    This is one of the first pieces of vinyl we bought together.. aww! Another completed hammered track from our various slots around Manchester, just lovely laid back vibes.

13. Coldcut & Hexstatic – Timber
    Personally one of my favourite and formative festival tunes. Used to rinse the Big Chill before it went downhill, and Ninja Tune always had a big contingent there – these 2 would put on an incredible AV set most years. Still don’t think enough electronic artists fully make use of the visual aspect, it always adds 50% enjoyment on for me.

14. LCD Sounsystem – Time To Get Away
    Both big fans of LCD and how they transcends genres/age brackets. Again, we used to rinse this album cruising to gigs and practices before 2BB were alive.

15. Kraak & Smaak – Mad As Hell
    Another staple from our sets, a proper party tune. Kraak and Smaak are just great producers, cramming lots of soul into their production in a way that is often overlooked by producers these days.

16. 2 Billion Beats – The Moodymann
    Our first track released in 2011. Hope you like!

17. Womack & Womack – Teardrops
    Our first regular gig together was an 80s night which Col got me on board with to break the weekly monotony. I hated it at first, but actually it became pretty much our biggest influence. It was such an exciting time in music: synthesis was developing, alongside different production techniques, and new genres of music!
