“Hey Chris, we’re thinking about going to one of those Rare Soul soulnighters or weekenders you’re always talking about - but what kind of music will we hear there? Is it good? Can we dance to it?”

This is how sometimes friends ask me when I talk about my favorite music. So I decided to put together a “quick mix” with 6 different styles of soul (4 tunes from each) that are usually played at those events.
You’re gonna hear some classics from:

NORTHERN SOUL

  1. Justin - Right Now
  2. Larry Williams & Johnny Watson - Too late
  3. Darrell Banks - Somebody somewhere need you
  4. Joe Valentine - I lost the only love I ever had

CROSSOVER SOUL

  1. Fantastics - Me and You
  2. Jay and the Techniques - Dancing mood
  3. Allison and Calvin Turner - What is this
  4. Sonny Til - I gave it all up

MODERN SOUL

  1. Las Vegas Connection - Running back to you
  2. Flame'n'King & the Old Bones - Ho happy day
  3. Pointer Sisters - Send him back
  4. Skip Mahoney & The Casuals - Running away from love

FUNK

  1. Melanie Burke & Jerry Mitchell - Sing a song of joy
  2. Jimmy Bo Horne - Hey there Jim
  3. Darondo Pulliam - How I got over
  4. Beginning of the End - Come down Baby

LATIN SOUL

  1. Village Callers - Evil ways
  2. Coasters - Love potion number nine
  3. Joe Bataan - Gypsy Woman
  4. Rex Garvin - You don't need no help

R&B (real “raw” Rhythm & Blues)

  1. Ted Taylor - Somebody's always trying
  2. Mitty Collier - My babe
  3. Louis Jordan - 65 Bars
  4. Triumphs - Workin

Note: I left out “Motown” because I think that everybody knows this kind of music :-)
