This last year I've wanted to get away from the more composed stuff was doing in 2014 and wanted to take chances more, play with more randomness. I've ended up with a ton of half-finished loops that may get arranged into something later down the road. This particular song was recorded back in August. I had a lot of loops set up to pick up the feedback from a simple midi piano roll that kept building on itself. I came back to it about a month ago and added these extra layers of filtered noise to help build up this sort of crescendo. I like crescendos. Loosely based on the chord progression to the chorus of Ellie Goulding's "Love Me like You Do", which is fun as hell to play on the piano.

When I started really working on music scores, I was quite taken by the fugue. It seemed like such a maximal kind of thing, like all of an idea could be stretched out, toyed with, manipulated and expressed in a fugue. The fugue was like a microcosm of the universal musical idea -- or something like that. I tried a couple of times with little success, but I thought this turned out nicely. It starts and ends in C, but moves in different places throughout. It's short, but it gets the point across. I hope to actually play one someday.

I've excited to announce I recently finished and sequenced this batch of songs for an album I've put up on the bandcamp page for you to freely download and check out. I'm really proud of this group of recordings, and really feel like I've expanded on myself as an artist and musician. The next stuff I work on is going in this abstract, ambient kind of thing, but I think I've learned a lot from really soaking in music theory and doing these more formal pieces and that's really gonna become a part of the arsenal going forward.

The new album is called "The Forms." Like I said, it's available for free on my bandcamp site. A link should be listed on but I'll leave it here as well:

Thanks to everybody on here who have encouraged me and listened. All of your kinds words meant a lot to me. My plays jumped about 3x's from 2013 to 2014, so I'm really happy with how the year has progressed, and I look forwards to exploring 2015. Again, my most sincerely thanks for listening and commenting. It means a lot to me.

I wanted to do something with somewhat of a ballad feel, and I wanted to get back to an electronic sound. The keyboard sounds become more sci-fi as it developed and I became fascinated with off-placed rhythmic elements that lend it this chirping-insect quality. Twists and turns before it's restatement. Enjoy.

Quite a few months ago, my wife playfully told me I never write songs for her. It's true for the most part, though she shows up from time to time and just doesn't realize it. In response, sometime in April I drafted this a bar chord progression in A (my go to pop key it seems) which a slight modulation into G with a nice melody on top. For months that's all I had. I wanted to try to do something for our anniversary but that was in May. Keep in mind we still haven't given each other our tacky anniversary cards yet because we're just those kind of people and were okay with that. A couple of months ago I drafted a simple ii-V-I B section but I still never worked on it that much. Life has been pretty rough for us this last month, so I really wanted to finish this project as a psuedo-love letter to how she makes me feel. Love can be subtle and love can be found in the little things. Sometimes though, it's just something you want to shout about it with the greatest abundance of joy that you can muster while wearing brown trench coats and holding up boom boxes that play Peter Gabriel. This is the shout. The joy. When you hear this, I'll probably be mowing the lawn. I know you have a cold, so I hope I don't wake you, but it is almost 1 pm. Love you.

I was wanting try something besides triadic modulations around different key centers and started messing around with harmonic minor. It's a simple AABA idea that took about two months to flesh out. I've been more concerned with absorbing theory idea and getting my fingers to translate these ideas better, but I'd still tinker with this song here and there. Figured out transitions over the last couple of weeks and finished it up last night. Hope you enjoy!

It's no secret from the latest batch of tracks that I'm trying to compose more material. My usual way of working is to fiddle around with a chord progression and go from there; anymore, things are more notated before really laying down sound.

This track is a culmination of that practice. It's based around a few short motifs that find themselves in various voices throughout the piece. The piece starts in minor and works through various keys and modes before arriving at the parallel major. There's a tumultuous quality that moves with the piece before its eventual ending in a peaceful, almost innocent place.

It wasn't a conscious thing, though the piece got me thinking about the Western metaphysical idea of the return to the garden. Our knowledge and growth as individuals in a fallen world naturally creates a separation between the created and the creator, but we as human being are endowed with the rational means to return to the place where we are one with that which created us. This way is by no means easy, but it is an attainable path.

Pardon my simplified Super Soul Sunday. Art can be many things, including communion. Consider this some, albeit imperfect, attempt at that.

For those curious, you can look at the score here:
I started working on this as I was writing it out that to me seemed to begin rather sad but end up triumphant. I like writing stuff like that. Spent the last week fleshing out parts to bring out those elements, trying to make it more than a piano-type song. Started as a sonata-form type thing, but that seemed too long so it's more an ABCA style. I'm happy with the results.

About two months ago, I decided to seriously study how to play piano. I bought a digital piano my wife thought was way too big and I began the work. I maybe spend about 30-45 minutes a day on it, with more time on the weekends, but I've been able to learn a few things and wrap my brain around chord inversions better.

I had been working on Bach's Minuet in G for the last couple of weeks and I wanted to write something of a similar vein (3/4 time, modulate to dominant for second part, yadda yadda). I chose D because it's an easy scale to work with that doesn't have too many black keys, and I've always liked the A major anyway. Most of this was played. I'd been spending the last year or so sequencing on Ableton and I've wanted to work for a more intimate, "out of the box" sound, hence the field recording of a train by the house at the beginning. I really like this one and think it shows an integration of what I've been studying and working toward in terms of composition. Always further to go.

It initially started rather quiet - just a synth sound fed though some filters to be rather small but trigger these overtones at times. Along the way I started to revisit Aphex Twin's "I Care Because You Do" and that seems to affect the rhythmic sound overall. I had been noodling around with the arrangement for a little over a month. I wanted to do this ternary ABA thing but I could never settle on the B part. Finally, I was noodling around with these secondary dominant chord modulations that really brought this unexpected uplifting movement that I liked. Ran with it and tied it all together. It's a rather noisy track but I think one of my better ones.
