Tribute

My most personal mix ever…Avicii is what started it all for me. When hip hop let me down I browsed Beatport and discovered his songs Swede Dreams and Street Dancer...instantly I fell in love with the beats and the vibes of the songs. Especially Street Dancer I got major Daft Punk vibes which up until then was my only foray into Electronic music. Then I started searching for more and discovered his BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix and got my mind blown. The intro by Pete Tong talking about his song My Feelings For You with Seabstien Drums with the snippet of it playing in the background resonated with me and that is still my favourite song to this day. I remember combing through online sites like Living Electro and discovering what would eventually be known as Levels (the song that changed it all) which was labelled as Tim Bergling - ID (funny enough I thought ID was the name of the song lol). Soon after, I bought a cheap Numark Mixtrack and well...the rest is history on how I started dj'ing.

I was lucky enough to have been in the party scene when he started touring. First at the legendary Guvernment complex for Labour of Love with my good friend from dental school Terry who was a legend and drove us from Markham to downtown and hooked up a hotel room. Seeing Avicii headline and play an over 3 hour set in the best damn club ever with the train horn and CO2 cannons that were so strong you couldn't see your hands as they blasted and cooled down the crowd is something I'll never forget.

Two years later I met my wife and we took our first trip ever together and went to EDC Las Vegas and since it was EDC week we decdied to go to Marquee Beach club for the first pool party of our lives together. I remember everyone trashing us and peer pressuring us for not going to see Above & Beyond at Wet Republic and as soon as he dropped his intro song (Blessed mixed with his Rapture remix) with fireworks blasting from the top of the stage we instantly knew we made the right choice.

As I got into dj'ing I tried to be that "edgy/cool" purist when he switched up his style and debuted Wake Me Up at Ultra and got trashed for it. I said he lost his ways and "sold out"...how stupid I was to not understand that he was just advancing not only his own style but dance music as a whole. You can argue if it was for better or worse, but I know for a fact it was because HE wanted to do it and he wasn't just creating something to proift off of by following a trend. He WAS the trend setter.

When the opportunity came up to see him at the Skydome for his TRUE album tour, despite it being all ages myself, Viv and J-Law made a spur of the moment to attend the all ages event. It's still a night we won't forget and he played an absolute banger of a set.

When our wedding came up I knew as a DJ I had to do something special for our entrance. I had the craziest idea of opening with "In Paris' by Kanye West & Jay-Z into Levels. It was amazingly appropriate as the Watch the Throne concert and album was the last bit of hip hop I truly loved before going into Electronic Dance Music. I spent hours honing the intro and decided to make it into a medley of our favourite Avicii songs and it's a moment I'll never forget walking into our wedding reception with Supreme money guns with the love of my life.

After Avicii passed I wanted to make a tribute mix to him, but in classic Cam fashion I kept procrastinating and pushing it off. I wanted to make it legendary and honestly didn't know or think I could do it justice. Fast forward to this past week where I found out one of our Bay Area friends tragically passed away unexpectedly. While that hit like a ton of bricks I knew I had to attend the service in person this week as showing up for something like this is something my parents and my brother Sterling and his best friend Dan always taught me. My goal is awways to try to bring the positive energy from the Bay’s favourite Canadian Dentist/DJ for our friends during this difficult time. I always love making new mixes before trips so I can listen to it on the plane especially syncing it with the arrival time so I'm pumped up as I get off the plane despite spending long hours on the plane.

I'll forever miss you Sean and I know you're up there partying with Avicii and will greet me with a shot of the finest tequila when we meet again. Thank you for giving me the inspiration to finally do this mix that I put my everything into.
