Profile description of BVLQ:

Lotus Queen and Bvitae first met via mySpace and realized they took the same inner city bus. Their shared passion for drum ‘n’ bass is the cement for their decade-long friendship and has led them to join forces as a DJ/MC duo, under the moniker BVLQ. Bringing live vocals into jungle’s raw, theatrical soundscapes adds a new level of crowd engagement. Together their intuition allows them to read what the other has in mind - they take audiences on a ride through the gamut of emotions and pay homage to many moments in drum n bass history. They have already shared the stage at Treemendus Music Festival, and local Calgary dnb nights Rinse and Flow. They continually hone their respective crafts and look forward to reaching wider audiences.

Lotus Queen began volunteering at CJSW radio and attended her first rave in 1996. Inspired by what she saw, and already influenced by ska music via the all ages punk scene, she began to delve into the culture of DJing and electronic music, particularly the sounds of drum and bass that were emerging from the U.K. and Toronto. Now, two decades later, she has risen to become the voice of Remote Emissions, one of Canada’’s longest running electronic music institutions. Since the show’’s start in 1997, drum and bass has evolved from a faint rumbling in Calgary’s underground to being a mainstay of the city’’s musical landscape. Lotus Queen has had the pleasure of opening for some of DNB’s finest, including DJ Rap, A-Sides, Commix, Aphrodite, Tester & Rcola, Bladerunner, and Teddy Killerz. Lotus Queen is more than just a DJ or a radio personality, some might say she is now the throbbing heart of the city’s D&B Radio scene.

Bvitae is a Calgary AB based vocalist, singer/songwriter and performing artist. Her colourful life-long influences range from classic soul to the modern realms of jungle and drum and bass. With songwriting and performance techniques that toggle bravely between both popular and more experimental methods, her works have received support from such influential figures as Chris Blu Mar Ten, creative design duo and long-time Bjork collaborators M/M Paris, and recent support from BBC Radio One’’s Benji B on his Core News program. Bvitae brings the art of delivery back to the foundations of musical expression. Her ear for cutting edge productions and harmonies has led to collaborations with notable musicians such as the late Greensboro NC based beat-maker, DFLN; Los Angeles based Wedidit Collective member and composer Juj, Toronto poet/spoken word artist Ian Keteku, and Vancouver based footwork dj/producer Ganjoid.
