I think we’ll call her Crystal.
In my head she’s nonchalantly swaying around in some 1984 basement dive, fag in hand (hairspray hazard). Her musical tastes segue between dramatic darkwave, Italo-disco and dubious leftfield synth-pop*.
*The latter depending how many vodkas she’s quaffed.
Crystal has little interest in the mainstream chart countdown, as cultivating next level trashiness takes more work than her blow dry. That said, I did manage to sneak the odd Stock, Aitken and Waterman production in through the back door. ;) Shhh.
TV:AM’s Mad Lizzy, aka Lizzy Webb punctuates this mix with workout suggestions to keep you sweating in your high-gusset lycra.

<itunes:summary>Ohaiii...Bunker Sessions is back with a further soundtrack to our seminal listening party.

Kath, disruptive as ever, brings pyromaniacs, ‘Big Black’ to the table with ‘Kerosene’ (00:25:47), “A song Jerry Lee Lewis wrote before he killed one of his wives.” (Steve Albini’s acerbic live intro). The general sentiment being something along the lines of “There’s nothing to do in this town, we’re waiting to die, let’s set it on fire.” - ritual fire cleansing of some luxury new builds anyone? ;)

‘81 appears to be a theme this month with the following retro-ditties from that year:
* Pete Shelley’s ‘Homosapien’ (00:06:32)
* ‘Allez Allez’ (00:36:59) - a nostalgic Auntie Maureen fave, credited to a memorable Sunday afternoon spent in Amsterdam’s Vondelpark.
* Electropop Queen, Gina X with her Quentin Crisp tribute, ‘No G.D.M’ (00:48:30)

2015, and over ten years since I hunkered down in London, yet I now struggle recognise the place. Many of the city’s iconic venues that shaped my existence continue to bite the dust. Are we getting older - or is London losing its sparkle? Meanwhile, aggressive developers continue to bulldoze Westminster by approval of rich bankers and short sighted politicians, blind to the benefits of our night-time economy.
So a moment’s silence if you will, for The End, The Cross, The Key, Canvas, T-Bar, SEOne, Plastic People, The Light, Cable, The Astoria and Jojos not to mention the spiritual home of Trade; Turnmills. :(
Yep, like it or hate it folks, the season of secularism and spending is nigh. Corporate greed rules and the banking system is hanging on by its last. As always this is something we all must endure so at Bunker Sessions we’re duty bound once again, to curate the winning soundtrack to the silly season.
FORTY tracks peppered with moments from the dearly departed Velvet Underground/Warhol factory star, Lou Reed - our featured artist for December.

Asked about his first memory of sound, Lou Reed said all of us share the same experience:
"The first memory of sound would have to be your mother's heartbeat, for all of us," he said. "You grow up, from when you're a peanut, listening to rhythm...But then there are nature sounds. The sound of the wind. The sound of love."
So over to Bethlehem Green for some meat mincing, nut cracking bunker jollies…
Special mention to Bunker Sessions contributor, Diamanda Galás, with a live performance and guttural rendition of “O Death” (1:04:35 - completely heart stopping). Benjamin Britten's 'War Requiem' is also perhaps the worst prelude to ‘the force’s sweetheart’, Dame Vera Lynn (1:59:53), but frankly the combination is rather hilarious and both scores were inspired by the same war - tenuous as the link may be. :)
Thanks so much for supporting the Bunker cause during its first year - and special shout to Jon for the help in sourcing some of the rarities.

Summer is now over, the nights are drawing in and as the leaves turn, we stand on the cusp of Autumn to stare down the barrel of death. Samhain (commonly known as Halloween or All Hallows' Eve) marks both an ending and a beginning in an eternal cycle where change is the only constant.

This month, we went back to our Celtic roots in Ye olde Blethenal Green (as it was known in the 15th century) for a celebration of death and impermanence. Our selectors toss some seasonal faves into the sonic cauldron to mark this time of transition; a conscious ceremony of music and opportunity for you to commune with your ancestors, honour your greatest fears and carry out your own internal harvest.

Look out for Kraftwerk (obviously - 8:58) as well as sexual revolutionary King Missile (21:40), an industrial, EBM tribute from Die Krupps, The Flowerpot Men and Nitzer Ebb (Slimelight anyone? 49:10) and we even get down with the American b-boy kids (Whodini, Rock Steady Crew - 2:08:57). Finally, no fitting tribute would be complete without a couple of Giorgio’s greatest lesser known collaborations (Nina Hagen - 37:30).
Laurent Garnier serves up atmospheric techno with orchestral sensibilities (the beautiful ‘Choice - Acid Eiffel’ - 32:33) and Detroit techno warlords, Underground Resistance (Jeff Mills/”Mad” Mike Banks et al) prove that they’re still head and shoulders above their contemporaries (Final Frontier - 37:17) (!!!).

I’ve saved you the potted history of Chicago here because acid house revivals are as common as West Country muck. The hardcore breaks that underlined the rave era however, never seem to get replay - so this is my single handed attempt to bring it back ;)) (56:04). Jungle-techno, Proto-Drum ‘n bass - call it what you will, but this was a homegrown sound at an exciting and potent time before the music splintered into the mass of genres and micro scenes we have today.

Bunker Sessions - Guilty Pleasures! A direct response to accusations of musical snobbery and part of our continuing effort to cover the entire sonic spectrum without musical prejudice.

Yesiree this month we put out a rallying call for shameless little monsters and Beliebers to let their hair down and shower the bunker with cheap POP thrills. These arrived in the form of Oli “Gaga” Mason, Jess “5 Star” Doyle and Stefan “Eurodance” Brunnbauer. The brief was to air on the side of ‘artfully mainstream’ and be considered and controversial in choosing something SHIT (but secretly wonderful).

Poor Madonna took this a bit too literally with complaints of a stomach upset and chronic diarrhea - sources tell me she’s a nervous wreck. One can hope b-boy Brahim passes her some Imodium soon. This mashup is one of my very own creations. Contact me at robder@mac.com, and I’ll pass on a .wav version if you’re nice.

So, a festival playlist you say?

You’re in good hands because ‘festival Queen’ Kim Wakefield was in the house (with an impressive 16 Glasto wristbands under her belt!) along with our faithful team of veteran bunker selectors. Sessions #16 takes a journey through some sunshine stompers and African rhythms to rock classics and stadium belters, finishing up with some twisted psychedelic rock, tribal techno and whistle blowing rave. Enjoy some of our transcendental moments in music from the great outdoors, steeped in anecdotes of quagmire mud, portaloo, sunburn, tent sex and nightmare acid. There’s more than enough here to please every dreadlocked crusty and his manky dog.

In the words of Hugh Romney, “There’s always a little bit of heaven in a disaster area!”

Featured artist for May is Herbie Hancock; keyboard master and king of the 'post-bop' jazz sound. Since playing with the Miles Davis quintet back in the 60s (oh yes!), Herbie Crossed over to pop audiences with the famous Head Hunters album...and cemented his position in the hip hop underground with body-popping, breakdance classic 'Rockit'. Look out for the teasing funk rhythms in ‘Palm Grease’ (17:47) and the warped proto-techno jazz weirdness of ‘Rain Dance’ (1:49:50 - from his 1973 ‘Sextant’ era; Herbie’s LSD-inspired ‘Bitches Brew’ moment if you will).

An eclectic mix here, as you’ve come to expect from Bunker Sessions with some seamless transitions between eras, harking back as far as the big band era of the 1930s! All thanks to the delectable Auntie Maureen who rocked up in person to charm us all with her picnic gramophone and the Ambrose Orchestra cover of Gershwin’s ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ (3:52 - complete with vintage crackles on shellac 78 format!).

Bunker Sessions has been sickeningly full of optimism of late...Hell, we even invited Roy Ayers to croon in the sunshine, but still, the weather spirits guided us inward to surrender to deeper rhythms. The view is more expansive down there and creativity comes from dark spaces; plus the Bunker goth contingent loves a bit of misery!

To spruce things up even more, with divine timing, Thatcher the milk snatcher appears to have left the building. “Ding! Dong! The Witch is Dead!” has secured a number one spot (much to the annoyance of the Beeb) and mass gatherings are taking place across the capital to shout, holler and ‘tramp the dirt down’. Granted, there’s a stark absence of intelligent commentary on the streets, but punk spirit does have a slightly medieval ‘real England’ quality, bringing a wave of 80s nostalgia with it.

However - everyone deserves a happy transition so Maggie, this one’s yours! Lets allow the harridan pay her karmic dues on her own watch. ;)

Enjoy! xxx

...and still none the wiser on how to interpret this ‘had to be there’ 80s cliché.

I did however spend the best part of a decade living out my halcyon days in Ibiza soaking up the turntable wizardry of modern Balearic supremo, Jon Sa Trinxa. *sigh* Shiny happy afternoons, sparked out in a heap on Playa de Salinas, drifting in and out of consciousness to the likes of Simon & Garfunkel, The Pat Metheny Group and the Jackson Five. Then at sunset, Jon would ratchet up the tempo a little with a bit of lazy chug-house (inadvertently coining the the irksome ‘beach house’ tag in the process).

90s aficionados skip to (1:40:02) for a mini Boy’s Own tribute. We also go a bit ‘Sound Factory/House of Xtravaganza’ with a couple of Danny Tenaglia’s early productions (1:57:12); an era that will never be put to sleep...at least in my living room anyway!

The jury’s out on what Balearic even means. (Does anyone actually know?) To me it’s any sound that translates to a sun lounger and cerveza (!). A blend of classic soul, Spanish acoustic guitars, afro/latin rhythms, ambient synths and psychedelic rock artfully interspersed with carefully considered cheese you’d never get away with playing in London! (For the purposes of irony you must understand *cough*)

This selection invokes memories of lazy afternoons on Sa Trinxa - hands down, my favourite chill spot in the whole damn world...bittersweet memories as I’ve not re-connected with the place since 2007 and here we are on the Spring equinox preparing for snowfall. Nnngggghhhhhhh.

Imbolc has passed...FINALLY time to emerge from February sluggishness and set some new intentions for Spring. Bunker Sessions has been to some deep places during the winter months so the vernal equinox edition was an experiment to see whether we've been playing to the seasons in ourselves...or whether we're just a pack of miserable old goths. ;))

This session is the product of a much smaller gathering and what we lacked in genre diversity, we certainly made up for in group energy and sonic flow. Featured artist this month is my childhood hero - MJ.

“Being on stage is magic. There’s nothing like it. You feel the energy of everybody who’s out there. You feel it all over your body. When the lights hit you, it’s all over, I swear it is.” – Michael Jackson (Rolling Stone Magazine, 1983)

The session ends with a chef d'oeuvre from The Jackson Five, ‘I am love’ - arguably their finest release.

We hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed delving/sharing.

This is my sound, laden with heads-down Masters at Work dubs and Kerri Chandler wizardry, whilst Prescription genius, Ron Trent, takes it DEEP to bring things to a close.

When the UK acid house juggernaut arrived in ‘88, I was tucked away in a village primary. This didn’t stop me noticing the change in tide and soon enough I was organising a school ‘rave’ for Children in Need and running ‘Buzz FM’, a radio station broadcast from a crap sounding amp during reading class. Interviews with dinner ladies provided a narrative for Bomb the Bass, Coldcut and 808 State much to the bemusement of my teachers! I guess you could say the writing was on the wall...

So where to begin when compiling a tracklist? This was an impossible task leading to many sleepless nights and neglected friendships but the process was worthwhile (and emotional in places). It’s my hope that somebody, somewhere will hear some of these for the first time and find themselves moved in similar ways.
Music fetishists were out in force for this month’s swinger’s session; rubber, talc, wry smiles and chin stroking nerds at the ready! With my corset pulled tight, all trussed up and taking shallow wasp breaths, I submitted to the every need of my insatiable selectors. Billed as an alternative to the saccharin smugness of Valentines day, February’s brief was to explore our collective limits and dig deep for a brazen playlist of nasty, no-holes-barred sonic FILTH.
To put everyone at ease, I nervously chatted about drapes and tupperware as guests coquettishly tossed their car keys into a bowl.
To counter the January blues, this session is an attempt to inject some fresh optimism into 2013 with a tribute to the many facets of disco; a genre which until its recent revival, was relegated to lowest common denominators such as wedding receptions and hen nights. Here you’ll find vintage Salsoul blended with some deeper shades, nu-disco cuts and a smattering of re-edits championed by the likes of Greg Wilson (previous Bunker Sessions contributor).

This session is laden with celebratory, painful, deliriously happy, sad and joyful memories of various people, nights out and precious moments; charting the musical journey my life has taken since 2009.
Once again we gathered, ushering in 2013 to co-create some inspirational sounds. Synchronous sonic threads weaved their way through London’s grimy back streets into the bowels of Bethnal Green. A perfect mind meld with some spooky overlaps in our track choices...and everyone’s favourite small, long armed monkey in the haus! (see blog photos)

One man show; miss Grace Jones is featured artist this month and we wanted to avoid the obvious bumper/slave/rose cliches, instead kicking things off with Nipple to the Bottle. The deep, rolling bass lines and stabby lyrics, “You ain't gon get it, I ain't gon give it”; characterising everything we loved about her Compass Point era, winding down with a dub version of William’s Blood; her most personal song to date.

Once again, this session isn’t an easy listen - and we make no apologies. Get it in ya! xxx

An apocalyptic soundscape for your magickal child.

This is a deliberate departure from the experimental weirdness normally associated with Bunker Sessions towards a more dancefloor oriented ‘classics’ mix (by my own definition).

I got a bit over excited with the sampler this time around, stealing spoken word sequences from various news broadcasts and author interviews (including John Major Jenkins at the start). Also note my tribute to New York’s musical lineage, taking a trip back in time to Mancuso’s Loft and Levan’s Paradise Garage (38:40). Also see 1:23:14 - five tracks overlayed, whipping up a 303 storm to rival hurricane Sandy - feel the acid love guuurl! ;)

Finally, the session also contains one of my very own creations; a mashup of Prince and INXS (29:07). Like it? Shoot me an email and I’ll supply you with a WAV version: robder@mac.com

This mix coincided with the first (of five) tattoo sessions with Tomas Tomas at Into You. I’m going for a lairy geometric splurge across my back; rather like being given a bollocking by a cheese slicer...but I digress. I channelled most of my nervous energy into this selection, digging deep into the archives for some nostalgic faves.

It’s a journey through some early house belters with hints of Moroder, Arthur Russell, Daft Punk and Kraftwerk along the way. Don Carlos kicks off proceedings with his atmospheric ‘91 face melter; ‘Alone’ (overdubbed with Roland Clark’s ‘Resist’ for dramatic effect). The track evokes fond memories of DIY soundsystem’s Love4Life party...before the old bill showed and cut the sound rig. :-/

Not in the mood for beats? Skip to 1:13 for a lesson in nu-disco, funk and soul, winding down to Don Blackman’s beatific, slap bass masterpiece; ‘Heart’s Desire’.

Merry meet girls, boys, faeries, woodsprites, dreamkeepers and trans folk...At Bunker Sessions we seem to be subconsciously playing to the seasons. The nights are drawing in, the veil is thin and the air, crisp. Nature's mirrors are directing us inward to convalesce and reflect. It’s fairly apt then, that this mix provided a dungeon soundtrack to London’s ‘Queer rites of Samhain' party.

As usual, there are a lot of flavours here from the avant garde orchestral to trippy dubstep, freeform jazz, reggae, disco and even an abstract human voice choir and Bollywood soundtrack (plus personal selections from Diamanda Galás and Greg Wilson!). It’s a bit far out in places so listening is both a challenge and a reward so I urge you to stick with it. Genre purists and faddists should leave the auditorium by the nearest available exit.

So, without further ado, tune in, turn on, psyche ooooouuuuut...
