This is based upon some improvisations I recorded lately, while working on some new sounds and sound-sets for upcoming projects; I think the result will be added as some kind of bonus track / addition to the release of a little side project for a friend.

Enjoy!

At the moment, I'm experimenting again with just intonation (and other "alternative" tuning systems / microtonality), something I always had an interest in, and keep returning to from time to time, trying to learn more about it.
.
One result of this "research" is the piece below, which I created just (!) recently, using something like a minor (or aeolian) scale in just intonation, based on a fundamental of 49 hz. While the major scale seems to be quite natural (sic!) to just intonation, I find the proper use of minor scales more complicated and not as easy to figure out - for this special track I actually used an eight notes per octave scale, with one more chromatic intervall between the minor third and the fourth (basically testing how that will work).
.
Maybe some of You are interested in the sound design aspect, too:
Actually, after determining the desired pitches (by using a pen and a pocket calculator) I generated several octaves of that 8-note minor scale (70 notes all in all, from 49 up to 20.000 hz) as simple sine waves, using the sound generation modul of Audacity (which allowes definiton of frequency by Hertz).
In this track, most of what You hear is just these sine waves ascending the scale (plus a little bit of sample based, programmed percussion and a supporting rhythmic pattern created with Absynth, and a bit of filtered pink noise).
.
For a little bit of more sonic (and musical) variaton, I've sent the sine waves through different effects: for example a tube saturation emulation to give the sine waves some more overtones, three different delays that create a rhythmic pattern and reverb. In some places I edited a bit more, creating melodic phrases that are enhanced with distortion and a bit of chorus (which resulted in that slightly guitar / square wave-like lead sound).

And some more little "tricks" - but however, most of the "raw material" is just sine waves and a little bit of pink noise... 8-)

Trailer including excerpts of the upcoming BETZLER & BRÜCKNER album "TWO" - also featuring contributions by Sammy David (guitar) and Fryderyk Jona (clarinet, Moog). Some of the material in this trailer won't be on the actual album, but on the promo EP that will be released one week in advance (called "Almost TWO") which contains some pre-mixes, some alternative versions and one or two bonus tracks.

Here's some further info about the project:
After thinking it over and discussing the matter with everyone involved the release date of TWO will be delayed one more week to get a little bit more time for the final touches, and the album will be officially available from the Syngate booth at this years Dinosaurier Synthesizer Meeting in Bocholt on November the 21st (...maybe a fitting event, as Tommy Betzler and me performed there two years ago).
However, Kilian (of Syngate) and me will still bring a little "something" with us to the B-Wave festival next weekend - a "promo preview EP" called (Almost) TWO that will contain some unfinished mixes, alternative versions, excerpts and also some otherwise unreleased material. You can purchase it at the festival for a small price AND there will be a discount code on the EP, so when You purchase the actual album, You even will get the little money you pay for the EP back (...the album will be cheaper).

We jammed merrily for about three hours, building sound sets and testing how to best combine our gear, and share parts between us.

We recorded about two of those three hours, and I have just roughly assembled some of the (hopefully) more interesting "scenes" in this lenthy medley.

Apart from choosing the excerpts and fading between them, the material is completely unedited, recorded directly from the mixer, mistakes and flaws included.

Please note that this is very much still work in progress and that these tracks will still change a lot until the concert (or we might play completely different stuff altogether).
Actually, these are not even "pieces" yet, just different bits of noodling, all made on the spur of the moment... ;-)

P.S. Some of You might recognize the bit at the end... ;-)

"Practice" in this case means simply setting up my live gear in my room, going through my older sound sets, playing along just to get a feeling for it again, thinking about new soundset, testing combinations, etc.
It happened that I also had turned on my old Mac and connected it to the mixer, because I wanted to record some solo synth lines for one or two pieces I'm working on. So, when I just had switched everything on and hit a few keys I liked that combination of sounds (which was more or less incidentally at the moment) so much that I just hit record and started noodling, and this is the result, without cuts or edits - hope You like it! ;-)

Peace Drone is a drone piece ;-) which I have composed and produced specifically for an event called "Musicians for Peace" which I have been invited to recently...

That each of us as individuals, humanitiy as a collective and Earth as our home which sustains all of nature and all cultures need peace - and need it soon and desperately - seems such a commonplace that I find it almost redundant to even mention it.

It * should * be redundant, but apparently, most of us (including myself) have not learned the lesson yet - so it needs to be repeated over over again, until we all have become peaceful from our hearts.

There's a wonderful poem by Peter Sinfield (...song lyrics, actually, from the opening and closing song of King Crimson's 1970 album "In the Wake of Poseidon") which I like to quote (I couldn't find better words anyway...):

I am the ocean
Lit by the flame
I am the mountain
Peace is my name

I am the river
Touched by the wind
I am the story
I never end

...

Peace is a word
Of the sea and the wind.
Peace is a bird who sings
As you smile.
Peace is the love
Of a foe as a friend;
Peace is the love you bring
To a child

Searching for me
You look everywhere,
Except beside you.
Searching for you
You look everywhere,
But not inside you.

Peace is a stream
From the heart of a man;
Peace is a man, whose breadth
Is the dawn.
Peace is a dawn
On a day without end;
Peace is the end, like death
Of the war.

(from, "Peace - A Beginning" and "Peace - An End", words by Peter Sinfield, 1971)
I upload this one especially for the ritual dark ambient group I was invited to recently - hope You folks over there like it... ;-)

The special thing about "Your Second Shadow" is that it is personalised, which means unique for each person who orders it.

The personalisation works like this:
I have created two "pools" of music - one containing 5 hours of rhythmic and melodic pieces, the second containing 30 (!) hours of longer drone ambient tracks.

For each "instance" of YSS, I compile one hour of music from pool one, and add one long ambient track from the second pool. Each single album is different from any other, still they all come from the same "reservoire" of music, that was especially created for that purpose.
"Ombra - Revisited" was released on the cozy little label BI-ZA-Records...

As I mentioned earlier, there will be a "standard" and a "special" version of that release; while already the standard version will include a wealth of bonus tracks, the special version will come with an additional album called "Your Second Shadow".

"Special" in this case means that there is really a special concept behind it: each single album will be * UNIQUE *, which means everyone who's ordering it will get a different version of "Your Second Shadow", of which only * ONE * copy does exist.

What You hear NOW is a mix of three ambient tracks (and one drum loop) which come from the pool of tracks of which each individual version of "Your Second Shadow" will be compiled (there will, actually, be more than 30 hours of music in this pool...).
<itunes:author>Michael Brückner</itunes:author>

This track will be one of the bonus tracks of my upcoming first (industrially pressed) CD "Ombra - ReVisited".

The whole "story" of this release will be told somewhere else; as far as this special track is concerned:

It was conceived and produced back in late 2009, as part of the sessions of the original "Ombra" album released in early 2010, but not included therein.

It is one of my rare tracks to feature lyrics, spoken, in this case - a surreal poem, that goes like this:

I.

the silent word that lay sleeping
beneath the silken sheets has risen;
like a phoenix, like a rocket - like a flame...

above the darkened river,
above the waiting frames
of cities bare of people,
of widows, bare of pain.

a cold wind travels with it
along the silver line

the child inside lies waiting
and the child's name is: time...

II.

so, we walk behind the green gras...
so we walk behind this line
while the child keeps sleeping,
while the child is feeling fine

we dance among the furnace,
among the stars - a little while,
we walk beyond the gardens,
and we open up the shrine...
Here's another of my rehearsals from today - one of the more rythmic, sequenced tracks that will make most of the show, in this case (...as I perform with a drummer, You see ;-) )
Instruments used:

-Waldorf Blofeld Desktop, for the sequenced / arpeggiated parts

- ELKA Solist 505 for the synth solos (played through a Korg A5 Guitar FX board)

- Korg 05 R/W Midi Expander, for some additional string sounds

By the way, did You know that the old little ELKA synth is said to have a non-licensed Moog filter...?! ;-)

Today I returned to my new (second-hand) ELKA Solist 505 for more noodles. Sorry: noodling! ;-)

This time (almost) all You here is just the ELKA, all played by hand - four tracks actually, three of them forming the "pads" in the background, and one solo voice on top of them. (Only right at the start there is one other sound, produced by some cheap drums send through a (software) vocoder + tons of reverb. This sound is repeated later two more times...).

All the rest is, as I said, the little vintage monophonic synthesizer (like in the last example played through an old guitar multi effect panel, which is, as I just realized, NOT by Yamaha - as stated earlier - but indeed by Korg. My bad...).

Only little post production was done, just a little EQ to diminuish the hiss and spit, some level adjustment and a healthy dose of echo.

I really love the lively overall character of the sound and the singing, warm quality of the lead voice - doesn't it remind You of early Kitaro, too...? ;-)

Prelude - Wedding Tune - Interlude - Sunturn Tune - Bronstein

The first three come from a set me and Cäcilia performed at the wedding of two friends in 2009, track four is from late 2006, and the last one for a never released compilation in 2008.

While the wedding tracks with the biblic quotations are suitable for Christmas (I think) and the Sunturn Tune brings some light to the dark winter days, the closing "pseudo-russian" track ends the set with some cheerful new years wishes (...sort of). I think it's a nice little set for this time of the year - enjoy!
<itunes:author>Michael Brückner</itunes:author>

This is a preview medley of my new album, 100 Million Miles Under The Stars, released on SynGate in June 2012. It's my 100th solo album in total, and my first "proper" label release at the same time...

The idea is that this medley will give interested listeners a better idea of the album than the rather short clips that can be previewed at SynGate's webshop, and MusicZeit Download page.

I also added a few comments and descriptions to give You an even better idea.
Unfortunately, I don't have exactly an actor's voice, and I guess also my English pronounciation could be better. ;-)

For those who can't understand my mumbles (...but is interested in my description), You can read it here:

Hi!

My name is Michael Brückner and I'd like to introduce You to my new album "100 Million Miles Under The Stars", that just has been released on SynGate Records.

The first track, called "Memo for Nemo Part 1" leads into the album by slowly building a calm, mystical and perhaps slightly melancholic atmosphere...

The second track, "Memo for Nemo Part 2" is more upbeat and adds driving sequences, and melodies to the atmosphere of Part 1.

In track three, "Cycle of Fire", the mood changes to something more lighthearted and positive, featuring some ethnic beats.

Next comes "Paradox Planet", starting with a long atmospheric introduction that evokes images of the deep sea, which later subsides into a friendly and playful sequence.

Next station is "Monokosmos", which starts as an extend, mystical ambient soundscape that later is joined by another sequence, this time without changing the tracks basic atmosphere.

Then, on "Waves Are Chasing The Wind", the wonderful flute player Hans-Dieter Schmidt (http://www.imaginary-landscape.de/) joins me and contributes a great performance on various flutes and flute synthesizers, over a backing that again devellops from a calmer mood to more rhythmic drive...

Finally, the album closes with the title track, starting with omnious noises and soundscapes. These subside into a solemn, richer orchestrated ambient part, until some more sequencing comes in, before the album calms down to a quiet ending, again enhanced by some gentle flute playing (...not by Hans-Dieter this time, though).

I hope You enjoyed this medley and it gave You an idea of "100 Million Miles Under The Stars".

Thank You very much for Your attention,
and good-bye for now...
