I was going to release a new Arpoador Sunset next weekend. but when news broke today that "the father of bossa nova" had passed, I shelved that for next month and put this tribute together instead.

João Gilberto was one of the principal architects of the Brazilian musical style bossa nova, died at his home in Rio de Janeiro at 88 years old following an undisclosed illness. Born in the north-east state of Bahia in 1931, Gilberto began singing at the age of 18. His release of the record Chega de Saudade in the late 1950s was considered a game-changer for Brazilian music. His style - mixing traditional and modern musical influences - inspired bossa nova music and many other artists after him. In 1964, he famously collaborated with saxophonist Stan Getz and featured his wife Astrid for an album that sold millions of copies and won international praise, including a Grammy for Album of the year. The sound of his voice and guitar will forever be linked with the beauty of the music of Rio.

Many thanks for all you gifts you left behind for us Mr. Gilberto and peace.
