In 1983, the New York punk band Sonic Youth released the EP "Confusion Is Sex".
Village Voice Reviewer Robert Christgau gave the band a negative review for the EP and in doing so described their sound as "Pigfuck Noise".

Sonic Youth ended up retaliating by naming a song after him on their next EP but the phrase "Pigfuck Noise" somehow stuck. It became a way to describe then emerging punk rock bands who were that little bit meaner, blunt and noisier sounding and were more likely to write about ugly or disturbing subject matter and feature a confrontational and pointedly offensive approach to the music, harkening back to the less palatable, extreme sound of punk rock bands a few years previously, before the 80s new wave or speed metal takeover or the eventual post-Offspring Smash, dayglo skate fashion punk era of the 1990s and beyond.

Originally only describing the similar approaches of Sonic Youth like Big Black, Butthole Surfers and
Killdozer. Over time it's been used to describe what was by the 1990s known as "Noise Rock".
In reading up on a few articles on "Pigfuck Noise" after being reminded of the term by an article online.
I started googling it and found a few websites and online magazines and music rating sites which had
attempted to list the best examples of what was and could still be "Pigfuck Noise"

So, being a massive fan of Noise Rock myself and owning dozen of these bands and compilations on CD and vinyl myself. I decided to seek out the bands listed in these lists that I know and love and the ones I
hadn't heard and compile them all into a "Pigfuck Playlist" podcast along with suggestions from friends and from not just the US but Australia.

So with contributions spanning from The Dicks and Flipper in the late 70s all the way up to Metz and Ken Mode in the 2010s. Some of these, that I found on these website lists, I myself have never heard so if they don't sound pigfucky - them's the breaks.

Some of the suggestions include no wave and early New York noise bands. A lot of these songs are still known today as the best punk rock songs ever written. Which shows that "pigfuck noise bands" were the most logical direction for punk rock to go in - had it not been seduced by the money and lure of commercial populism.

It's my Birthday this week. To celebrate I've made a series of music podcasts about some of the music that has influenced me. I was going to do back announces but it would take up too much time. So I've just made a music podcast with a few descriptions that can be read here.

PART 1: TEENAGE RADIO AND LATE NIGHT VIDEO

- Visage "Fade To Grey" was the first ever record I bought and the first electronic music I heard at age 5. Probably where my fascination of saw waves started.

- The KLF's "White Room" was the first electronic album I really dug into. It was not popular to be into at the time at age 12, but I was pretty hooked on it. Likewise, Technotronic I had a few cassingles of. I forgot about them when I got into metal at 14 and started "hating techno" but went back to them around the same time I started producing.

- I had a neighbour who I bought weed off in 1995 when I was 17. He mostly sat around dealing and drinking cheap scotch and water in his flat because he was broke. He was the first person I met that was really into techno.
One day he had scored some acid and invited me to partake with him. I'd never taken it before. He was talking to me about a rave he'd gone to in Fremantle and was describing the experience with great enthusiasm and telling me I'd "probably like it". I told him techno was "crap and fake music" and cited a few examples I hated, stuff that was in the charts. He shook his head and said "No they don't play that stuff. They play real techno. You've never heard real techno trust me!!"
He asked me if I'd heard The Prodigy and I said "Yeah I've heard that song" referring to "Poison" which was getting a lot of airplay on JJJ a the time. He shook his head and smiled and pulled out a dubbed cassette from a rickety drawer and put on The Prodigy's "Experience"
It was definitely not like techno I'd heard before. By the time I was peaking, I was a few songs into the album. The speed of the beats sounded fucking heavy to me and the tribal vocal samples and sped up rhymes transfixed me. After it was done, impressed that I was getting into techno, he got excited and then showed me a few jungle mixtapes he had. The first one was recorded live and had an MC at what sounded like a massive party. He was riling up the crowd until he stopped and screamed out "WE'RE GOING TO THE JUNGLE!!" and a massive roar of the crowd and a giant rolling breakbeat followed.
It was my first experience with Experience, LSD, jungle and breakbeats. In a delapidated flat in Doubleview but still memorable nonetheless. I still remember the music on Experience. But being on acid, I remember it differently to how it actually sounded. What I heard rather than what it actually sounds like was a huge influence on my own production which would start a few years later. It's still a favourite album to this day and it was the first moment I realised beats and kicks could be as heavy as metal. After that day and the acid wore off. I started actively seeking out jungle and breakbeat. Goldie's "Terminator" was one of the tracks on those mixtapes. Because it was the mid 90s. I didn't really seek out a lot of underground techno though, rather the emerging "big beat" techno scene that was coming out of the UK which was all over the alternative and indie radio. I never really found a lot of classic rave stuff until I was in my early 20s.

- I had already been into The Melvins for a few years when I heard "Boris" on RRRFM punk show "Bogan Drivetime" in 1997. But the Atlantic Records stuff didn't sound as monstrous as the shit on "Ozma" and "Bullhead". The song "Boris" was the first song I taught myself to play on guitar. I drove one of my friends crazy, constantly playing the same riff over and over when I hung out at his house. When he and I started a noise band called Analogue Seaotter in early 1998. He christened us all with ridiculous band names. Jericho Von Ebineezer, Basil F. Starbuck and me "Boris Otterdam". A name which came from him calling me Boris because I was always playing that riff and "Otterdam" because it was both a reference to Seaotters and to Rotterdam the mecca of gabber.
Bands like The Melvins, Midget and Unsane and their overwhelming heavy dirges were something that definitely inspired my early noise recordings. The use of feedback and tidal wave crashing chords, was something I tried to recapture electronically and sometimes succeeded in doing.

- In 1993, my final year of high school, I was getting into industrial music in a big way. I had already heard Nine Inch Nails and Ministry via indie radio and Rage but The Soundtrack to "The Crow" introduced me to My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult. "After The Flesh" was the song I listened to the most on there. I found a full MLWTKK album at Dada Records in the city. "Confessions Of A Knife" was assembled like a concept album but blends seamlessly from song to song, despite the changes in tempo and style. It remains one of the darkest and most ethereal industrial albums without delving as deep as the slower crawling acts like Coil. MLWTKK became one of my favourite bands and I've since collected every release they ever did. Getting into MLWTKK eventually lead to buying The Wax Trax! Box the following year. This became the key to finding more industrial music like Coil. Foetus, Front Line Assembly, KMFDM, Laibach, The Young Gods and the many Ministry side projects to name a few. The first time I ever used a drum machine. I was trying to imitate the beats for "The Days Of Swine and Roses", Skinny Puppy's "Deep Down Trauma Hounds" and The Young Gods "L'Amourir" (particularly the way the beat skips off time).

- Budd, Rapeman and Hammerhead are all examples of one of the biggest influences on my breakcore production. Noise Rock. Budd's sludgy heaviness was something I wanted to harness but not as much as the variation and demolition style of fast walls of noise that Rapeman and Hammerhead had. I met one of the guys from Hammerhead in early 2013 at a show in Melbourne and told him about this. He seemed unimpressed ;)

One band in particular Closed World Assumption was (at the time) a two piece. One guy on guitar and one guy on keyboard with a PC next to him on a table on stage. I was pretty much blown away with the performances and sought out other industrial shows to attend. The early industrial scene in Perth was a massive influence on me. To find industrial that sounded great was a win in general. To find it at home and from other cities around Australia was even better and to see how easy it was to do and to make sounds that were apocalyptic with little more than a PC and a keyboard - would be a definite influence later. There was a lot of great and unique industrial music that came out of Australia in the 1990s and I hunted down pretty close to all of it. Perth bands Closed World Assumption, Cell 7, CSU, Biomekanik, Hogans Anti-Heroes are included.

- When I first discovered digital hardcore and gabber in 1997. It combined my interest in industrial music and techno. A lot of the pioneers of breakcore brought both of those influences into their sound and some in particular like Low Entropy, Hecate, Christoph Fringeli, Kid's Return and Abelcain definitely had a huge impact with the way they weaved that industrial, noise and dark and hard styles of jungle and hardcore together. None more so for me though then Cdatakill's "Shapeshifter" an overdistorted break nightmare, driven by a simple melody, a machine like rumble and demonic choirs. To this day I have heard nothing in breakcore come even close to it. On vinyl it sounds like the gates of hell opening.
The most exciting thing about the emergence of digital hardcore and breakcore in the late 90s was not just the amount of amazing music out there but the fact that a lot of labels, websites and online resources had stockpiled, uploaded and hosted either snippets, entire catalogues of music and live sets for free. The concept of finding high quality and well produced breakcore for free online was a godsend for those of us who could never afford to buy as much as they wanted and at the time in the late 90s, it was still a pioneering way of getting underground music the exposure that could get it heard around the world without an immediate physical release available for punters.

- By the turn of the century, now in my early 20s and experimenting more and more with electronic music and noise and recording frequently. I met a fellow Godflesh obsessive while organising show for the local punk scene. He opened my eyes to some of the more adventurous and experimental music being made by JK Broadrick and Mick Harris that I wasn't aware of. Both producers I was very much into via Scorn and Godflesh.
He told me about their "beatless dark ambient projects" and introduced me to the world of Dark Ambient music and Death Industrial. In particular "Final" and "Lull" and Broadrick's first two albums for Final.
By 2001 I was listening to and experimenting with so much dark ambient and noise that I figured out a way to combine analogue methods with FL PC production to make noisescapes and dark ambient music of my own. I've also included here a track from the compilation "Ambient 4: Isolationism" which is a compilation exploring the use of space and silence in noise and soundscapes.

He told me about their "beatless dark ambient projects" and introduced me to the world of Dark Ambient music and Death Industrial. In particular "Final" and "Lull" and Broadrick's first two albums for Final.
By 2001 I was listening to and experimenting with so much dark ambient and noise that I figured out a way to combine analogue methods with FL PC production to make noisescapes and dark ambient music of my own. I've also included here a track from the compilation "Ambient 4: Isolationism" which is a compilation exploring the use of space and silence in noise and soundscapes.

- By 2000 I was collecting a lot of breakcore both online, from record stores and mail order. One of the compilations I found at Perth record store Dadas was Ambush Records sampler "Mash The Place Up". Widerstand, Zhark and Praxis were all labels producing really dark and confronting breakcore. But Ambush out of South London was mostly originally junglists who wanted to push the style even further with noise and punchy, loud breakbeats and ragga records fed through distortion.
At the record store there was no such thing as "breakcore" so my friend Adam and would trawl sections at the back of the store with names like "avant garde/noise/idm/glitch" and that was where we'd find breakcore record and CDs.

- After Current Value, DJ Hidden was one of the first dnb producers I followed. I first heard him in early 2003, when a Newcastle Australia label "Killing Sheep Records" released a compilation CD with Epsilon. 13th Hour, Paul Blackout, Overcast, Noize Creator, The Enemy and DJ Hidden called "Vile Techniques". Hidden's track "Empty Streets" which I still think is not only his best track he ever made but one of the most important dark dnb tracks of the 2000s - was the opening track of the compilation. The bassline was overdistorted and fed back. But the intro with a light, offtime beat over swirling noises and this amazing operatic vocal sample was what grabbed me. The timing of that bassline to come in made it an absolute classic. The simple beat was perfect. Basic drum machine patterns, no fills and that anthemic bassline. I spoke to a young breakcore producer years later and cited that track as how easy it is to use simplicity in beats to make a real impact. He responded "it sounded like he didn't really know what he was doing and it's not as good as his cut up amen tracks"....

I've actually made about 20 of these and I'm picking and choosing the ones that work the most. I'm going to upload them periodically from time to time. They're totally self indulgent but I'm older now so a lot more reflective on how music has effected me. Listen or don't.

- While living out of home for the first time in 1997, in a flat in Peninsula Rd. Maylands in Perth with an old childhood friend. I was mostly driving my housemate insane with constantly playing ATR. One of his friends heard me playing it one day and said "ah that's just gabber". Not nowing what gabber is he offered to show me.
I ended up getting a lift with him on a pizza route one day. He was a pizza delivery man. In a tiny, beaten up hatchback, he would snort speed off his dash, drive a million miles an hour through Maylands and North Perth and deliver pizzas. Windows down due to being summer and the car barely held together die to the speed he went at, let alone the massive volume of 909 kick drums blaring out of the door speakers and shaking the windows violently.
He explained to me that gabber and hardcore techno was the "bastard son of house". The idea being to use distortion and velocity to break heads beyond just creating dancefloor tunes.
His glovebox was full of 2 and 3 cd compilations of "Thunderdome" and other titles I can't remember that were adorned with garishly, bright, glowing skulls and flames and dodgy Rob Liefeld type comic cover rip off cover art. Skulls, flames, demons. guns seemed to be the recurring theme.
Aside from the exhiliration of listening to this insane smashing techno shit while racking rails of dexies off of a sun cracked Barina dashboard. It was hilarious watching him deliver pizzas with the gabber still blaring out of his windows while he stood on someone's doorstep and made his delivery.
He offered to make me a tape of his favourite gabber tracks and I gave him some blank cassettes and he filled them up within a few days. On those compilations were Quindoor's "Full Energy Flash" still my favourite gabber track and Delta 9 and Speedfreak.
When I first started producing, gabber and hardcore was a huge influence on me. A lot of it was very simple and heavy on impact. It was easy to read and pull apart to see how it worked.

- Noise is pretty much where I went from wanting to make music with others to just wanting to make it all the time - regardless of whether anyone else was interested in doing so or not.
In the beginning, discovering some aspects of noise and the home recording abstractions and field recordings aspect. It reminded me of tape recording my and friends voices at home on my Mum's stereo when I was a kid. There was an immediate click with me and the idea of noise as a DIY music movement, because I knew ho easy it would be to make it with little to no equipment.
I'd only been in one band at the time I first heard noise. Bu the frustration of not getting my own ideas out was already something I as familiar with. Noise pretty much prepared me for a life of learning to always have the knowledge to make my own music for me - without anyone else needing to show up, be interested or show me how to do anything.
It was a guy I met while at Art School in 1998 who firt showed me Einsturzende Neubauten and that's where it started. The industrial aspect of machines running and then angry German voices barking into a dIstorted microphone before a metal drumkit being pounded away as an intro...was also a major appeal to someone already "well versed" in industrial for the past few years.
- Mike Patton's "Adult Theme For Voice" I heard a few years earlier through a friend who was as much a Faith No More fan as I was. Technically, I guess it was the first "noise" record I heard. I was a big fan of it at the time. Especially (again) the cheap, home recorded aspect of it.
- After being introduced to Neubauten, Throbbing Gristle and Coil. I sought out as much noise as I could. Most of which was via people I met through the Perth noise scene. Some of these like Can, Neu and Thou Gideon I got into through them and some I got into later through a work colleague I met in 2005. Power Electronics and the more extreme noise came around that time. Except for Merzbow, who I was lucky enough to not only see perform but play alongside at a festival in 1999.

By the end of the 1990s. Perth Western Australia, "The world's most isolated city", a city of around 1 million people, 7 skyscrapers and lead by a mostly repressive Government, was beginning to warm to electronic music - beyond DJing.
Well..not exactly. But the end of the 90s did see an explosion in local original electronic acts as well as DJs. Dance Music was still not exactly massive and Perth was still mostly a rock n roll town but there were pockets of electronic producers around the city. By the end of the century in fact. The beats and breaks were poised to takeover. House, trance and typically commercial styles of techno were gasping for air in a city that was overdosing on drum n bass, jungle and hip hop. Perth was obsessed with breakbeat styles. Pubs were hosting jungle DJs, The Drum Club was becoming a weekly regular and alternative clubs were dropping more and more big beat and drum n bass. The most famous example of the product of this culture was a two piece drum n bass act formed by two friends from the metal scene who would later add local dnb DJ El Hornet and become the mega dnb act "Pendulum". Easily the most obvious example of Perth's love of the drums along with hip hop act Downsyde.

In 1998 after getting into noise and experimental music. I started attending noise shows regularly as well as eventually hosting some of these acts in my own shows. The Perth Goth/Industrial scene that had inspired me a few years previously was something I was attending nights for fairly regularly now that I was older and moved out of home. Some of the bands that had inspired me had folded and some like Cell 7 were still going. Eventually I met other likeminded fans of industrial, electronic music and the darker side of techno at alternative clubs, goth clubs, noise nights and punk shows. In 1998, The Perth Industrial scene pooled their interests and released a compilation called "Black Paradigm" which collected some of the remaining industrial and dark electronic acts like Hogans Anti-Heroes, Cambion, Biomekanik, and Red Kerb Kiss (some of which I've already played in previous podcasts). The Perth Industrial scene and the noise scene were the places you could mostly see the weirder glitch and ambient electronic artists, or maybe doing a short set at a rave or local electronic show at an inner city pub venue.

In the new century. The digital electronic music revolution had firmly arrived. In these clubs, gigs and local happenings I met groups like Chrism and Fenris, Gate and Zoo Transmissions. The sight of PCs being dragged on stage and harder, breakbeat and glitch oriented techno styles was at first resisted by the cool local media (A Bubblehead website review described an act as "who wants to see two goths chain smoking and right clicking their mouses?").
Spurned, in particular by some sections of the Perth industrial scene. The new breed had arrived and were inspired more by the likes of Squarepusher and Autechre than by Skinny Puppy and Nine Inch Nails.

A look at a time of eager, passionate young men and women from mostly low income areas, dressed in combat pants, work boots and tattered band shirts, exploring drains, breaking into derelict warehouses and dragging PAs and generators into sometimes clearly unsafe locations just to have somewhere to play and somewhere to dance to something not house and avoid sleazy bouncers and unscrupulous pub venues.

It was word of mouth, black, barely texted websites with giant red, flashing fonts or credit card sized handbills from friends or just posters spotted randomly down a side street, somewhere like Broadway or Marrickville. Usually advertising a lineup a party name and a phone number. Ringing the number usually took you to a messagebank where a voice would announce quickly and bluntly a time to call back for directions and then hang up. It always sounded like you could be arrested just for hearing it. If not that. The mystery website with only a jpeg of the party would suddenly have detailed directions on how to get there, which were usually posted 4-5 hours before it happened.

This meant driving into empty industrial areas or catching buses and trains to obscure parks in the inner western suburbs or better yet for some like me, walking briskly through side streets a few suburbs over. To arrive and venture cautiously down wet, smelly alleys, patches of unforgiving trees or literally into the sewers.

Upon arrival you would be sometimes looking at a giant derelict building with a business sign sunfaded on the side since it's closure in 1945. Windows and doors boarded up and nothing that resembles a residence anywhere on the street. After looking at your friends while half cut or coming up and saying "is this it?" and pulling the crumpled piece of paper out of your pocket using your nokia to read it again. You realise this is the place and look for something resembling an entrance which could be a staircase covered in broken glass or a hole in a brick wall the size of a dog door.

You could be venturing through multiple broken inner windows or just walking in the dark using your phone as a torch across cold concrete in hangar sized rooms while barely seeing where you're going. So far the only sound being the echoed clinking of glass from the bottles of beer and vodka in your plastic Liquorland shopping bag and the cautious breathing and amplified heartbeats from you and your friends snorting too much speed off your bank card while preloading and watching The Simpsons.

After walking and climbing and exploring in almost pitch darkness and using a barely visible snakelight. You finally feel glass shake and hear the dull monotone of a distant kick drum.

Yep. This is it.

You use the kick drum like a lighthouse to guide you to where you're gonna be for the next 6 to 15 hours (Depending if you pick up, get too high, too drunk, wander off or the joint is raided by cops) and finally step into a high ceilinged room with 50-100 wandering, dancing and air punching familiar ferals standing in front of a table with a black sheet and a a skinny dude in a shredded longsleeve or hoodie, nodding silently along behind while operating a heavily stickered laptop, a rack of gear or set of decks. Barely lit by a few lights and various cigarettes with the smell of weed and generator fuel hanging in the air.

Tracks featured were regularly played out at parties held by crews like Killerwatts, Core-Tex, System Corrupt, Com-Baton, and Prohibited Projects to name a few. Mostly tracks from official releases but some like Trashcoder and Dimfigure were rescued from decaying CDRs and I don't think have ever been released.

I went for the industrial hardcore selections from these artists, even though some are more known for breakcore. At the time a lot of us were still young and obsessed with the underground hardcore sound. Some like Core-Tex Labs, Stoyk, Epo and Autopsy Protocol were living or staying here extensively at the time and quickly became regulars in the scene. If I had to pick one track that represents that time. It would be Diablo Negro's "Dead Can See". They were playing almost every party in these years and I lost count of how many times I came in part way through or the start of that track to a party. By the time that was released, I knew it by heart. These tracks like "Dead Can See" and Diabolique's "Shaynekore" and Rybacker's "Playschool" I heard dozens of times in those years. They might be dated now but they instantly remind me of that time.

I tried to really cue and cut these tracks into a mix with DJ BOX. But I'm not good with not pushing buttons when distracted. So take it as it is. It's not perfect. It's actually exactly like my attempts to DJ in 2003_2004 except this time I wasn't drunk and on speed.
