We are things that labor under the illusion of having a self, that accretion of sensory experience and feelings, programmed with total assurance that we are each somebody, when in fact everbody's nobody...
The opportunity for me to have a mix is quite rare these days for obvious reasons. I try by hook (or invariably crook) to keep up with new tunage which I still avidly collect but when my luck (and the vintage technology) holds out I do find myself often thoroughly confused by the amassed collection of tunes that I have but have not had the opportunity to play. Where to start? Luckily on Thursday I had a friend of mine's 2013 Top Ten folder to play with.

When I first listened to Mr Hodgson's selections I was immediately struck by how complete and complementary the choices seemed and how (perhaps serendipitously) 'set-like' the 10 tracks were. Omegaman aside the other 9 tracks were all new to my dusty old shell-likes and they appeared to me to be absolute corkers (and incidentally quite far removed from what I would under normal circumstances be playing myself these days given the opportunity). Pleasantly surprised would be an understatement of grand proportions.

So with a slight air of cheekiness and liberty taking I sat down and recorded a quick mix of the tracks in a running order that made sense to me. Recorded quickly in one take, pants-flyingly before the MacBook logic board does it's weird, intermittent (and seemingly unfixable) black screen shut -down malarky this then is a Tribute to The Hodgefather and his excellent 2013 selection - the credit for the tune choices obviously being entirely his. And very good they are to imho.

Hopefully you enjoy listening to it half as much as I did playing them (quite loudly) during the recording.

Recorded July 2011 - Notes from the original 2011 release:

I grew up in the 70's in the racially diverse community of Newham, a born and bred eastender, and long before multiculturalism became a 'dirty' word to be used like a weapon by the likes of the Daily Mail readership. Curiously against a backdrop of poverty, unemployment, the rise of the National Front, Thatcher and eventually riots I can recall a greater sense of Unity and cohesion. Perhaps we could more easily identify a common enemy. Maybe it is my own personal sense of nostalgia at work, rose-tinted youth; memories of the cloudless skies of the future that stretched out before me like a blank canvas. We called it hope.

At this time, long before the advent of the Internet, new musical experiences were a little more difficult to uncover and Reggae was something of a revelation to me. Embraced and further popularised by the punk culture these rhythms provided a perfect soundtrack to the urban sprawl and decay of the late 70's. For information and further experience we relied upon friends (real ones – not Facebook shadows), the music press, radio shows like the weekly Roots Rockers show on Capital (hosted by the legend David Rodigan) and the occasional cross-London trek to Ladbroke Grove to visit record stores like the almighty Dub Vendor. To feel this music in person and to truly experience it would normally involve attending a late night blues party, held and stuck up high in some dilapidated tower block (strictly rub-a-dub stylee) or the annual pilgrimage to the Notting Hill Carnival (Big up the All Saints Road and the Sledgehammer Youth sound system!). Before we lazily hunched over our keyboards a little more effort was required and things were more real and organic as a result - I miss those times and the faces.

This podcast is my own personal and humble tribute to those times.

Don’t expect any beat matching or unnecessary EQ fuss here - It's strictly One Drop and all about the Riddim; remember this music comes from a long history of the love affair between the drum and the bass, and from the time none of us could ever imagine pitching anything up to the nose bleed highs of 170bpm and grime was nothing more than a ring around the bathtub.

If you can find a few cans in your local offy - break out the Red Stripes.

One Love,
Recorded June 2011

Tunes featuring some brilliant work by (amongst others): Art Of Tones, Greenville Massive, Jimpster (in remix mode), Mr.. Fantastic Man himself Mic Newman and perhaps my favourite uplifting track of the year (2011), Lovin - in the form of some stellar remix work by André Lodemann - (does this man know how to treat a vocal or what?). A Raw underbelly is provided by the works of Danilo Plessow (MCDE). To me… it’s all Deep.

Notes from the original Soundcloud posting (June 2011):
Even by my standards it had been a pretty horrific week. I felt small and insignificant amidst the hum of modern life. I watched an ivory tower crumble. The sky remained intact. So I sat down under the cover of darkness cut only by a flickering candle or two and decided to mix some tunes to make me happy (an attempt at a cure), with several bottles of Newcastle Brown as my only accompaniment. The plan was simple… This is a recording of what happened. Music is the cure. Thanks for listening.
