In 1995 Ali Roberts Appendix Out came to my attention when the Ice Age 7" was released on Will Oldham's Palace Records imprint, almost 25 years later he is still a fascinating and brilliant songwriter and conduit between the traditional and contemporary forms..

"I'll adapt a tune or a turn of phrase or a conceit from a traditional source then take it from there. I'm interested in making new music but I'm also interested in the old music that informs it. The original show debuted Off-Broadway on January 22, 1968 at The Village Gate Theater in Greenwich Village and ran for more than four years. In 1975, The American Film Theatre produced a movie version.
Jacques Brel contributed most of the music and French lyrics; English translations were provided by Eric Blau, and Mort Shuman.

I wanted to create my own version of this seminal work, which introduced Brel to an English speaking audience

It was shortly after the release of that in 1987, I found myself standing right next to him at a theatre bar, during the interval of a Steven Berkoff production of Metamorphosis. I could of told him how much his music meant to me, i could have offered to buy him and Coco a drink. I could have remarked how much Tim Roth's Gregor
resembled the Thin White Duke, with his black waistcoat, white shirt & slicked back hair.
But no, I completely froze, and all i could think of of was "where did it all go wrong David?"

This 2 part, 3 hour retrospective, largely chronological, looks deeper at his whole career.
Trying not to be too obvious in my choices, it includes outtakes, rarities, b sides, memorable live cuts etc.
It's one i've been wanting to make for quite some time, to sort of redress the balance.

He came to prominence performing and recording as Songs: Ohia, both in solo projects and with a rotating cast of musicians. There's prolific and then there is BHRIDB, a one man cottage industry with over 100 releases spanning a decade. Everything about each release is striking, from the digital artworks & texts featuring a who's who of 20th century icons, to the limited physical editions, objet d'art in their own right, to the music best summarised by the man himself.
"Many of the releases range from spontaneous improvisations, experiments and sketches, extended noise curiosities, tests for new equipment or a technique discovered the night before and through to more finished and conceptually complete work.
There is a connection to each release, but it doesn’t have to be a linear narrative"

I will leave the listener to delve deeper into the mystery of BHRIDB & the person behind it (a former student of Brian Catling no less) and hopefully find something adrenaline rushing, mind blowing and life affirming as i do.
