Mastered pretty hot for training purposes, not sure what to think about it yet. You're losing a lot when clipping and limiting this hard, especially on drum elements. Let me know what you think about this one - are the loudness artifacts still okay or did I go overboard?
Also, check out the band's original release as well and let me know how I did in comparison!

Metal remix of the track "We've Got Hostiles" from the original 2012 Black Mesa soundtrack by Joel Nielsen, featuring a guest solo by Manuel Hirner of Remember Your Scars.

When the Black Mesa dev team recently announced that the Xen chapter would go open beta soon, I - as a huge Half-Life nerd - was of course super excited and decided to commemorate this event with a metal remix. Both the new soundtrack and the Xen beta are available now at the time of this release but when I was planning this remix, I unfortunately did not yet have access to the new Xen soundtrack. So, for this one, I went with "We've Got Hostiles" from Joel Nielsen's original Black Mesa soundtrack released back in 2012.

Huge thanks to Manuel Hirner, my bandmate from Remember Your Scars, for supplying the amazing guitar solo you hear during the outro chorus! Check out his music projects and books via the link below. Shoutouts also to another bandmate, EdiEmptYness, whose solo from one of Remember Your Scars' work-in-progress songs inspired the chorus melody in this remix.

Also, I wanted to do a bit more on the visual side for this remix. Upping my production game, so to speak. Therefore, I got another buddy, Tobias Hartmann (link below), on board to capture some ingame footage and edit it. He has managed to pull off somewhat of an emerging storyline with this one and I couldn't be happier with the outcome. Unfortunately, the Source Engine gave us quite some trouble during video capturing, so please excuse the occasional framedrop. This was also a learning experience for us, and learn we did indeed. I can probably already spoil that there's gonna be a follow-up project in this style, and the next one's certainly gonna go more "smoothly".

That's it for today! If you want to connect with me, Twitter (@bjoernkmusic) is the best way to do so. Over the last 3 weeks, I've been teasing this remix on there with small audio snippets and behind-the-scenes looks into my production process. Come and say hello, and be among the first to know when I'll be releasing something new.

If you like what I'm doing and want to support me, consider buying my instrumental metal album "ORACLE" on Bandcamp, iTunes, or wherever you feel comfortable. If you enjoy my style on this remix, chances are you will also enjoy my original music!

Have a good one, y'alls :)

If you enjoy what you listen to, consider supporting this independent release via one of the buy links below or right here: bjoernkmusic.bandcamp.com/releases

Oracle is a multifaceted modern instrumental metal album dealing with themes of self-doubt, insecurity, and depression, but also of healing and overcoming. A precise chaos, inspired musically by modern and classic metal acts such as Metallica, Keith Merrow, Tool, Meshuggah, Periphery, Dream Theater, Devin Townsend, and many more. In fact, each of the tracks contains a nod to one or some of my favorite artists. Let me know in the comments which ones you spotted!

Oracle is an independent release and the BKM project is an unsigned one-man effort. This means, I covered all cost of making and publishing this album myself. If you enjoy what you hear and would like to support me, the best way is to buy this album via one of the links provided below. All profits directly support me - no additional middle men!

(Protip: Bandcamp provides lossless downloads and some additional goodies like high-res album artwork and a wallpaper!)

<itunes:summary>Debut instrumental metal album 'Oracle'. This is a personal one - a wordless tale of struggle and overcoming.

(Protip: Bandcamp provides lossless downloads and some additional goodies like high-res album artwork and a wallpaper!)

02:34 - Exordium
05:10 - Torn
09:26 - Catharsis

Never mixed a pop song before but if one of my favorite engineers-gone-content-creators, Warren Huart (The Fray, Ace Frehley, Aerosmith), hosts a mixing competition, I'll gladly take the chance.
Participate here: https://producelikeapro.com/blog/produce-like-a-pro-mix-remix-contest-2018/

Goal of the Produce Like A Pro Mixing & Remixing Contest 2018 was to either 'just' mix or completely remix this track by Scottish house/pop duo Miavono, called 'Right Here'. For the fraction of a second, I actually considered submitting a full metal remix as I tend to do for video game music but considering the target audience for this contest ... let's just say, it's probably the smart move to keep it in an EDM context :) Since I don't have much production experience in this genre, I took very few liberties and sticked with the original recordings all the way. I just dropped one guitar track since it was very abrasive sounding and injected some flavor using automation and the odd vocal fx here and there.
Overall this was a pretty fun and quick mix. All of the tracks were very well behaved and easy to work with from the get-go. Was actually a nice break from mixing metal, which - at least for me - regularly devolves into week-long "trying-to-make-this-work-somehow" marathons.

Speaking of metal, my original instrumental metal album 'Oracle' will drop this month after I initially announced it for June. My schedule got a bit messed up when I had to migrate between countries but I'm back on track now with preparing the release. I'll be moving yet again in September but once I'm settled, I think we can all agree that it's HIGH time for another VIDEO GAME METAL remix, don't you think?

Let me know what you think of this one despite it being a bit 'out of character' for this channel. Cheers!

I tried to go for a Keith Merrow-style mix and guitar tone this time as I'm a huge fan of his work and because I found his style quite fitting for this project. As usual the weakest link is my guitar tone - I can't for the life of me get a decent tone out of my ampsims. Hit me up if you wanna sponsor me a 6505 MH for the homestudio :P

This was initially a "byproduct" of Into The Cold Light but I decided to turn it into a full mix. It's essentially a mashup of several short soundtrack snippets that play during the "We don't go to Ravenholm" level, e.g. "Requiem for Ravenholm" and "Ravenholm Reprise". While I'm not that keen on how the guitars turned out, I'm proud of the rest of the mix. Especially the drums turned out great imo!

Instrumental metal remix of "Triage at Dawn" from the Half-Life 2 soundtrack. Original composer: Kelly Bailey

Triage at Dawn - this hauntingly beautiful melody greets Gordon when he leaves the eerie place that is Ravenholm and walks out into the cold light of day, straight into the arms of Combine forces. This is in my opinion the most powerful song from the HL2 sountrack.
Huge shoutouts to all the others who created remixes and covers of this song, you obviously influenced me a lot! I took some liberties with the arrangement, I hope I was able to bring something new to the table and that you enjoy my take on the track.

It started off as a track to test some new mixing techniques and ended up actually quiet nice. It's the first time I'm really happy with one of my records, sound quality - wise!

It's definitely not perfect though and at some points, my playing is a little sloppy and off the beat. Anyways, I hope you enjoy :)
ALL THE CREDIT goes to Sos Sosowski for creating this hilarious game and writing this super catchy soundtrack!
Stuff used for recording and mixing: Cubase 5, various Freeware amp and cab modeling plug-ins (LePou is a genius!) and the Alesis iO|2 audio interface.
