Since the beginning of our Claydrum podcasts, all mixes were performed by artists that were either on our very own artist roster, or dj’s headlining our events. As of late however, we decided to give this concept a bit of a twist, by giving spots to dj’s who heavily inspire us. For this exclusive podcast we invited Ben Long from SpaceDjz!

1. What were your first experiences of dance music? When did you get the bug?
Ben Long: I had been into the Bboy / breakdance / Graffiti scene
when i was at school. When i left school, 1988 was the year of the Acid house boom. I started to go to a lot of the famous parties back then like Rage,Shoom, Spectrum etc and i was totally hooked! And in about 1990 i decided i wanted to produce music and become a DJ.

2. Have you always been based in Maastricht? If not, what drew you there?
Ben Long: Im not actually based in Maastricht i am 20 minutes away by car but i actually live in Belgium.

3. How did you hook up with Claydrum?
Ben Long: Via my long-term associate Mr Oliver way. Who is now
partner of Claydrum and a very friendly guy!

4. If you would put on your own line up, money no object, who would be on the bill?
Ben Long: Dj Cheese , Electrifying Mojo , Derrick May , Jeff Mills, John Peel and i would probably book myself also smile-emoticon

5. What way do you prefer to play, digital or vinyl?
Ben Long: At the moment i use CDJS 90% of the time , i have a digital set up using Traktor which i use depending on where and what i will play and of course i have DJ’ed for the last 18 years using vinyl. I don’t like the whole digital vz vinyl debate. I think both platforms have their pro’s and con’s , and as a music lover i feel the message in the music is more important then the platform you deliver it on.

6. Who is your favourite producer at the moment?
Ben Long: Thats a tough question as there is so much hot music about at the moment. I tend not to get hooked up on this style or that style or any specific producer, i just play music form across the board that i am into at the time. But i will say i have been playing a lot of Mark Brooms music recently most of his output is very consistent and it fits my sets perfectly

7. What are your production plans for 2015?
Ben Long: I have some solo material coming out on various labels and as Space Djz with my partner Jamie bisssmire we are currently working our 2nd Album and also some singles and remixes

8. And last but not least: What are your top 5 records of all time?
Ben Long:
1 Carl Craig - Home Entertainment
2 MODEL 500 - Info World
3 Charles B - Lack Of Love
4 Reload - Death Of A Disco Dancer
5 Chris the glove Taylor & ice T - Reckless

Ben Long (Space DJz) is a veteran of Techno. There are few DJs and producers in the modern techno world who can truly claim to have pioneered a style and sound, and call it their own. Such statements are often declared, but rarely justified. In the case of Ben Long and his partner in the Space DJz, Jamie Bissmire (also known for his part in the ground breaking dub techno group, Bandulu), this claim would be unarguable. Releasing their debut EP on the infamous Infonet label they have also released on labels such as Soma, Kombination Research, Synewave and their own imprints Ground and Potential Recordings. More recently Ben released a his first solo EP for EPM Music titled “Toltec” which featured remixes from Darko Esser aka Tripeo and Detroit Grand Pubahs. DJing to them is an art, and with over 20 years on the world circuit, whether performing together or individually they have the knowledge and experience to rock any party.
We are pround to have him as a regular guest for the EPM nights at our club!
