INFO:

For christmas I'd like to give you all a little sneak peak to some orchestral filmmusic I had the pleasure of recording this year, of which the album will be released soon. (Links etc. here to follow)

Enjoy this extended version of the 2nd cue from the "Spacehasen Suite" (2016), which will be part of the promotional soundtrack to the planned animated feature "Spacehasen" (= Space Rabbits) by Zielstern Studios ;-)
We also recorded some more music for another project on that day, so stay tuned for additional exciting news and releases. :-)

Trivia:
The orchestra for this recording consisted of members from the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Vienna Symphonic Orchestra, ORF Radiosymphony Orchestra Vienna, Wiener Kammerorchester, Orchester der Vereinigten Bühnen Wien, Wiener Volksopern Orchester, and many more great ensembles.
It was a big pleasure and a great honour to work with them and I'm looking forward to doing another project with them soon :-)

More detailed info (release etc.) coming soon.

Enjoy and let me know what you think!

What meaning do we connect with the words goodbye or farewell?
Be it the farewell from a beloved person one might never see again, be it a temporary goodbye which holds the joy of looking forward to a reunion, or maybe the farewell of a part of yourself in order to develop into a new section of live.

I tried to incorporate these different situations, feelings and considerations into this piece, which builds a up as dialogue between the two ensembles, based on a 6-tone motive.

I started to work on „Abschied“ back in February 2009 as a commission for a concert where both a woodwind trio and a string quartet would perform each in a separate section of it.

The organisers asked me to write a piece that would combine both ensembles and also could be performed with very little rehearsal time at hand.
So I tried to work around the problem of coordination with either controlled aleatoric structures and switching the main focus back and forth between these two ensembles.

_________________________________

In Bayern trinken's gern a Bier, in Japan nur an Tee,

In Bayern trinken's gern a Bier, in Japan nur an Tee,
----------------------------------------------------

*The piece "conundrum" was composed between October, 2009 and April, 2010.
I have tried out many new (at least for myself) elements of composition in this piece.

The idea behind it was the attempt to create as much rich timbres etc. as possible out of a limited tone and register space and sound space (as there also is the lack of other things as no deep tones/chords/sounds; also the ensemble builds a a homophone instrument combination with the same timbre relationship).

The violins are put up symmetrically in the semicircle, in order to create a kind of "Real Life Dolby Surround sound" feeling of the melodic lines, sounds developments etc. by the different instruments in all possible directions and combinations (e.g., on the left - on the right, outside - inside, etc.).

Besides, the 4th violin forms a kind of centre from which everything passes around the ball and from which as good as everything is initiated.
It was important for me, while writing the piece, to pay attention that the degree of technical difficulty is almost equal to the play within all 7 violins.
Actually an ideal piece for a big violin class, right? ^^

The world premiere of this piece took place in Tuesday, 27th April, 2010 in Joseph Haydn-Saal of the University of Music and performing Arts Vienna
within the scope of the class evening of the composition class Michael Jarrell (my teacher).*

The first rough mix, of my rescored cue for the big chase scene from the movie "Safe House" (starring Denzel Washington & Ryan Reynolds).
Percussion & Piano are sampled, the strings (2 quartetts: 2vl,1vla,1vc | 1vl,1vla,1vc,1cb) were recorded live at the recording session of the Hollywood Music Workshop 2012 in Klosterneuburg, Austria on Monday, July 9th, 2012.

The workshop was led and the recording sessions supervised by Mr. Conrad Pope (a well reknown orchestrator, scoring assistant and more in Hollywood).

Sadly I didn't manage to score the complete 7 minute sequence, but I'm quite satisfied with what I got here.
Thanks to Mr. Pope, Dimitrie Leivici & Lilo Bellotto (organizers of the workshop) and the great musicians from Kammermusikgruppe Atout for this interesting experience.

I hope you like my oldschool action/suspense-scoring approach.

New music composed, arranged & conducted by
Bernhard Philipp Eder (*1984)

This is the ending scene of the Austrian short film "Lunch Break" with a new score composed by me at this years "Hollywood Music Workshop 2011" with Blake Neely & Nathan Blume at Klosterneuburg, Austria
http://www.hollywood-music.at/

All participants of this workshop 2011 had to pick a scene (some did the whole film!) from "Lunch Break" to rescore with new music, some of them combining samples with live instruments (the recording session with oboe, violin & violoncello occured on July 13th, 2011 at the workshop - supervised by Blake Neely & Nathan Blume).
The final results showed a great variety of musical ideas, approaches etc. - all of them great and on a very high level!
Congratulations to all my colleagues who participated in this years workshop! :-)

I tried to recreate the tension of the original score while working with a different approach, more relying on the effects you can produce with real instruments.
I used a combination of several elements (a certain signature sound, the piano theme at the end in it's full representation, inside piano effects, soundscapes with the live instruments etc.) to achieve a tension likewhise to the original film score by Axel Hirn. Since I only had enough time to write, arrange & programme the last scene (I would have liked to do some other parts as well in order to show how the musical elements would have come together) this is the final result.

Watch the filmclip with the new music here: http://youtu.be/yVerNOoAC6s

Enjoy!
