& just like that... its the summer time again! Barebulb Sessions episode 11 kick-starts the summer season with a killer all-vinyl selection of jazzed-up, funked up, sizzlin' soul & dreamy, gritty house to soundtrack whatever it is you're up to under those blue skies!

Derek Curtis is no stranger to the Teesside DJ circuit having been a regular face serving up a great taste in house music across the towns more popular venues during the mid-late 90s & early 2000s, including regular stints at The Arena & a DJ competition win at (the much loved) Bar Zantia on Albert Road.

Following a brief hiatus, Derek returned playing an integral part in the Groovebox events throughout Middlesbrough, Darlington & Newcastle bringing to town legends such as Mark Farina & Greg Wilson as well as a host of emerging & established names such as Mr Mendel, Kon & others. Taking on a more eclectic taste & playing to the areas trendier nightspots, Derek's versatility has recently seen him support the likes of Heller & Farley, Get Down Edits & the launch of the upcoming Electric Boogie Disco Warehouse featuring edit king, Al Kent on 8/6/19 at Base Camp, Middlesbrough.

Introducing Gary Beckett, once a regular face at The Arena during its peak throughout the 90s, & former resident at The Dickens Inn & Spensley's Emporium, to name a few (Middlesbrough, UK, for the unfamiliar). Gary is amongst several familiar faces in the Teesside area who have certainly found their groove within the flourishing local bar scene, in particular, The Twisted Lip on Baker Street, in the town centre area where he & his counterparts are able to draw upon a wealth of experience & years of crate digging for a diverse audience.

Barebulb Sessions episode 10 brings together an old school approach to 'hands-on' DJing & contemporary digital tech. Its a nifty combo of classic vinyl cuts & tasteful reworks cleverly pieced together with samples, adverts & interludes, joining the dots between laid back soul, edgier hiphop, jazz & more uptempo breaky & housey edits with plenty of twists & turns in between!

Episode 009 drops as things heat up for Valentines weekend & what better way to get you in the mood than an aptly themed, a'hem, 'Wet panties mixxx' courtesy of 'Fatdog' aka Neil Bilton.

For Neil, a life-long passion for music evolved into co-owning one of the most respected record shops in the North East of England, a real hidden gem. Throughout the 00's, by day, Fatdog Records in Middlesbrough quickly became the daily hang out, networking hotspot, source of inspiration, & furthermore, education, for a wealth of established & up & coming local DJs alike. By night? well, if you know, you know. The multi-floored after parties back at the cleared out shop premises that hosted DJ Spinna & Quentin Harris will forever go down in Teesside folk law, only reaching a reluctant end when the neighbours reopened for business!

For over a decade, the 'Dog' remained at the forefront of forward thinking & amongst a collective hosting some of the first (or only) events in the North East to feature DJs rooted within a more diverse, deeper, or US-lead sound, neatly side-stepping the far more prevalent mainstream or tech-house direction which had long sice became the pursuit of other events. As bizarre as it seems to read back over, a whos-who of respected DJs/artists consisting of the likes of Recloose, Andres, Omar-S, Moodymann, Theo Parrish, Derrick May, Chez Damier, Marcellus Pitman, Patrice Scott, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Prosumer, Benji B, Gerd Jansen, Levon Vincent.... you get the picture (theres more too!) - all coming to shifting venues across Teesside amidst an ever-changing, sometimes struggling & yet somehow adapting local nightlife within a sleepy industrial town, intent on carrying on resiliently in the face of deep recessions & multiple venue closures. It rings true when people say that they dont miss a good thing until its gone.

Having now retired from the hazy late nights of DJing, it seemed entirely right to dangle that carrot once more in the hope of enticing the selector within... We're really glad that we did. Theres the stuff you know, the stuff you thought you knew, but dont, tracks youve never heard before & those you want to know the name of right away - a true record shop guy to the end!

Its that time of the year when the inevitable party or 3 has us all getting together with friends & family, looking back, & reminiscing about the the good old days.

Before the meteoric rise of Teesside's trendy micro-pubs, selfies & social media, download DJs, gin wankers, craft ale connoisseurs, & a new wave of re-edited soul, funk & disco that has since swept throughout a whole host of new venues, 2 DJs had already been quietly working away, getting their fingers dusty, honing their skills, & doing things, well... properly.

In 2004, 10 Bob & Duncan Disorderly, (Ben Forbes & Liam Dunning to their parents) had quietly slipped away from the then current crop of local House DJs to take things in an altogether more creative direction. Inspired by such cult figures as DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist (look up 'Brainfreeze') & the group side of the Technics/DMC World DJ Championships, their Sunday night 'Plastic Hip', held at 2-Zero-2 in Middlesbrough, would see them going back to the very roots of Hip-Hop & Turntablism.

Bringing along with them 4 turntables, 2 mixers, samplers, & even pushing the boundaries in experimenting with (what was then alien technology in a DJ booth) Stanton's 'Final Scratch', the first incarnation of DVS & the precursor to modern day Serato & Traktor Scratch, they took familiar records & used them like instruments, tellng a story with music. It was a forward-thinking take on presenting some of the finest Soul, Funk, Hip-Hop & whatever else they saw fit, cutting, scratching, juggling & reconstructing what you knew into something exciting, interspersed with perfectly placed acapellas, tongue-in-cheek humour & clever dialogue samples, all giving a cheeky nod to knowing exactly what they were doing.

What follows is a 'Plastic Hip' promotional mix thats been tirelessly compiled & mixed, with a tracklist far too extensive to list which was released a year later in 2005 - certainly ahead of its time for a smoggy industrial town in the North-East of England, & simply put, one of the best mixes you'll ever hear!

Its hard to believe that our last episode aired during the Christmas period of 2016 & here we are once again with yet another approaching almost a whole 2 years later - where does the time go & what have we been playing at?! We need to get back to it...
Episode '007' welcomes the return of Steven Slater, the 'Q' of Teesside's DJ community with more audio gadgets than you could care to shake a stick at!

In the hope that everyone has been enjoying the festivities so far, we’re dropping in a little surprise for you all! We’re officially just past the half-way point of the Christmas period; that calm after the storm, before the next storm. The part where we’re sick of the sight of Christmas food, but find ourselves eating it anyway. We have no idea what day it is - nobody does - but we’re grabbing whatever down time we can and trying to recharge those batteries before the final big one to see in the New Year…

It’s fitting then that we’ve invited along Contrast Wax and Nowhere To Roam label owner, Mark Graham, to help fill that void and divert our attention from those same old TV programmes that we’ve watched year upon year, reciting word-for-word, to something with a touch more substance, yet brimming with the same comforting nostalgia.

It’s a perfect lazy selection that, from moment we hit play, welcomes us in from the cold to hang up our coats and help ourselves to a drink as the occasional gentle crackle of vinyl pops away like an open fire in the background as we catch up and are reminded of tracks we thought that we had long forgotten about.

Make yourself comfortable. Its time to wind things down a little…

Ahead of the release of BBS Episode 5, moving away from our usual blurb about a mix, we let Ste give a little insight himself with a brief Q&A...

.Q. For those that maybe dont know you've being doing this for a very long time, what is your first memory of music and how has it inspired you to this day?
A, Well my Mam loved music, albeit pop music. She had top of the pops 12" LP’s and I used to love them. Disco girls on the front and charty disco on the discs. So I guess that was my introduction to my future vinyl obsession.
.Q. From when you first started collecting how had your tastes evolved to the present day

A, I started collecting vinyl in 92/93. I actually started with drum and bass/jungle and/breaks and hard rave. I was well into the rave scene for years before the tempo slowed and I felt house music. House always seemed to weak back then. Eventually it grew on me and thanks to Danny ramplings love groove dance party, Pete tongs Essential mix and his Friday show I had a constant education before I could get into clubs. I guess from there I just grew to love lots of music by being open minded and exposing my self to different styles constantly. I used to goto rock nights and house nights over the same weekend. Plus the Sj's who really influenced me were never afraid to play different styles in a 3 hour set, something that's quite rare these days.
Q. Giving barebulb sessions open ethos with regards to genre what direction can we expect from your selection?

A, well I really just picked out a selection of records from many genres that I adore. Mostly older records now but some newer ones too. So there's not a direction as such. Just a cross genre selection of music that constantly inspires me really, without being too anal. I wanted the listeners to recognise or at least identify with the music

I wanted the listeners to recognise or at least identify with the music</googleplay:description>

Hang up that mirror-ball & turn down those lights because barebulb sessions 004 is taking you back! Back to the very roots of house music, the birth of DJs mixing across multiple turntables, back to the focus of clubs being built upon fantastic sound systems & prominent resident DJs... Grasso, Mancuso, Levan, Siano, Knuckles, Gibbons, Jellybean; the list could go on, with all having contributed to club culture as we know it.

Throughout the mid-late 1970's, Disco would rise to take the world by storm. An unmistakeable intensity & unashamed flamboyance, it brought celebrity culture, extravagance & glamour, coupled with distinct ,tongue-in-cheek promiscuity. It become a hedonistic movement that would eventually unite club-goers from different backgrounds, providing a sense of belonging still fondly remembered today.

With that in mind, we introduce Tekayu Harrington, a Thai-born, British-raised, now expat residing in his native Bangkok & carrying the house & disco torch throughout the city & beyond.
Recent years have seen Tek firmly establishing himself on the local circuit, promoting his own events & supporting the likes of Dimitri From Paris, John Morales, Joey Negro, Dicky Trisco, Todd Terry, Sandy Rivera & Francios K - no doubting his credentials there then!

004 throws you in at the deep end; a few truths from Gallery & Studio 54 legend, Nicky Siano & its away we go! Effortlessly merging lesser known edits, tasteful covers & straight-up anthems, its an energetic 74 minutes of pure unadulterated fun!
