The lyric was inspired by my trip to New York City in September 2015, where I visited One World Trade Center shortly after the anniversary of my cousin Richard's passing, on the day after what would have been his 41st birthday. It was an overwhelmingly emotional experience for me - seeing Manhattan for the first time, standing in the rebuilt World Trade Center and remembering my cousin five years on since his passing. I had a single malt whisky in memory of Richard and a Hudson Baby Bourbon for the great city of New York.

I heard Peter's fantastic piano improvisation for the first time yesterday and immediately felt the need to compose a short lyric and vocal parts to go with it. For some reason the music instantly brought back memories of the day I spent in the new WTC, paying my respects to the victims of 9/11 and honouring the memory of my cousin.

I took the cover photo in Silver Lake, LA on Independence Day, 2015, where I spent the day with my good friend Craig and his girlfriend Hillary, who were kind enough to invite me over so I didn't have to spend Independence Day alone. We went for tacos and beers on Sunset Boulevard, and I didn't even realise that's where we were until we'd already been there a half hour.

We went to the legendary Whisky-A-Go-Go and had dinner at the equally legendary Rainbow on the Sunset Strip, where the air was positively filled with barely legal smoke! The infamous 'door' incident will live long in the memory too...

After 10 weeks working in CA, I spent four amazing days in New York exploring, walking so far that my feet bled. I stumbled upon Greenwich Village and the legendary venues 'The Bitter End' and 'Cafe Wha', and went out drinking until 4am with some fellow travellers I met outside, courtesy of a strategic pack of cigarettes I had bought especially for the occasion (I don't smoke, by the way). The next day I cleared my head by walking to Brooklyn and taking a trip to the Statue of Liberty, before saying an emotional goodbye to the city I've always dreamed of being in...

Before heading back to the UK, I went back to CA and spent my last few days back in Irvine, where I had been living and working with some truly amazing people, particularly Navid, Babu, Ramtin, Alex, Giuseppe, John, Craig, Ben, the amazing Eric, as well as many others too numerous to mention...

This song is dedicated to and inspired by everyone I was lucky enough to meet during my time in the USA, and I miss them all very much.

This is a jam that took about 5 hours to write and record, just a couple of days before I set off to work in the US over the summer. As such, it was largely a message to myself to have confidence when faced with a potentially nerve-wracking but exciting prospect. I needn't have worried, as the time I spent in the US was beyond anything I could have hoped for. This song still serves as a reminder to have courage and to make the most of life, despite a natural tendency to hide away and avoid change.]]>

RIP Daevid Allen - a true inspiration

A few weeks ago, I was hunting for 5 pence in order to buy myself a chocolate bar from the vending machine at work. In desperation, I searched my desk drawer in the hope that a 5 pence might magically appear. I didn't find one, but I did find a suspiciously fat envelope... it turned out to be full of cash that my family had given me for my birthday and Christmas in 2013, and enough to buy myself a bouzouki. This is my first song with said instrument - I'm finding it great fun but very hard to play, and even harder to record with, hence this is a very simple effort. Originally written on the piano, the base tune is played on my trusty acoustic guitar, with the bouzouki track overdubbed and the piano added at the end.

The lyric was inspired by a school trip to the Firth of Forth where we sailed under the Forth Bridge on a misty day. The song title is also a reference to the street in Edinburgh where my old school is/was :-P Keen geographers will possibly note that you cannae "set sail for the ocean" from the Firth of Forth, but never mind... keen photographers will possibly note that this original photograph of the Forth Bridge wasn't taken on location, but is actually a picture of the bridge on the television ;)]]>
