Came to your home, shot you were you lay
you were so tough, you were so hard
now you're a mark, on the coroners card
Whoaa they shot you down
There's a new king in town and he's after your place
You can cut of the head, but you won't kill the snake
Despite military regulations forbidding "any negro or person of colour" being an officer, Tull received his commission in May, 1917.

“He made a mockery of the firmly held view of the Army Council that white rank-and-file soldiers would not take orders from a black man. A soldier that inspired such love in contradiction of ‘commonsense’ notions and official rules and regulations should be a prime candidate for national recognition. Currently we are doing workshops about Tull in schools, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, and the incredulous response to not knowing him is always met with a desire by young pupils to energetically explore his life.”

On 25th March, 1918, 2nd Lieutenant Tull was ordered to lead his men on an attack on the German trenches at Favreuil. Soon after entering No Mans Land, Tull was hit by a German bullet. Tull was such a popular officer that several of his men made valiant efforts under heavy fire from German machine-guns to bring him back to the British trenches. These efforts were in vain as Tull had died soon after being hit.

He was the first British-born black army officer and the first black officer to lead white British troops into battle.

He played 111 times for Northampton Town FC and was signed by Rangers FC before he left to fight in the first world war.

Lyrics
Walter Tull died in 1918, shot by a German gun
Private Billingham tried to get to his body, but it couldn’t be done
And as Walter fell, his story died too,
Britain’s first black hero and no one would know the truth

Born in Folkestone in 1888, Walter’s parents died when he was young
Sent to an orphanage in Bethnal Green, a new life in East London
And Walter started playing football and he signed for Tottenham Hotspurs
But the racist abuse down at the Bristol ground
meant they dropped him to the reserves

Walter didn’t care he moved to Northampton Town FC,
Played 111 games before the war intervened
Signed up with his team and they went to the front line
An officer saw something in him that would change the course of time

And if you look in the book of the time
It says only white men can lead the line
But in 1917 Walter stepped out for King and Queen
The first black man to lead the whites,
He fought in six battles before the end of his life
He should have won the MC (Military) cross but the army somehow forgot

Oh Walter you’re a hero, a hero to this land
The first black outfield footballer, the first black officer man
Oh Walter you’re a hero, a hero to my country
Fighting for truth and justice now, something you would never see

Walter Tull, know his name

MASSIVE THANKS to Billy Playle for his editing, bass, drums, cello, mix mastering AND patience, Louise Ring Vangsgaard for her amazing fiddle, Asger Hoyer for his hospitality and recording patience (and one of the acoustic guitars is him!!!) and Fred Jam for all his help and enthusiasm!

Another murder in London town, shots ring out on the underground (underground = subway)
And the people that did it are back at work, yeah that's the way British justice works
One year after he was killed Crown Prosecution Service will reveal that
None of the officers that killed your child will ever have to stand trial
And that's just the way it is my dear, that's just the way it is
It's just the way it is my dear, that's just the way it bloody is

22 07 05 Jean Charles De Menezes dies (English people say 'o' to mean zero in dates and numbers)
Officer Sir Ian Blair suddenly will declare
to suspend an independent police investigation,

Murdered by dum dums, they're against the law yet nothings done
Suddenly no CCTV all a bit.. of
a mystery and a second IPCC investigation (IPCC = Independent Police Complaints Commission)
When they pushed him down they held him to the ground
then they shot him 8 times........ with 7 in his head

Cover up.. because it's getting cold, cover up... and you've been told to
cover up... but the truth's out there, cover up... police don't care,

Cover up .......why did they follow him up the road?
Cover up....... let him on a bus to go?
Cover up....... let him off at Brixton Tube? (Tube = Subway. In this case subway station)
Cover up....... the police didn't have a clue.

Cover up....... let him take a second bus..
Cover up....... he got to Stockwell without a fuss.. (Stockwell is the name of the area where JCDM was killed)
Cover up .......and then they followed him down below...
Cover up....... and they blew his head off as the tube was about to roll. (Tube = subway train)

Fired seven to his head they made sure he was pretty dead and it's...
Sorry we killed your child, our mistake but they'll be no trial and it's..
Wrong time, wrong bloody place, we're sorry about that dear, that's our mistake..
Had him by the arms, yeah that boy from Brazil, he was unarmed

After the appeal was lost the website was taken down.

Sometimes some stories have to be told. Sometimes some stories have to be just kept alive. I'm so glad I made it and I'm so glad the song came out how I imagined it.

Long live Jean Charles de Menezes.

MASSIVE THANKS to Billy Playle for his bass, drums, cello, and Fred Jam for all his mastering help and enthusiasm!</itunes:summary>

I don't know the Mizen family and I have never met them. I thought long and VERY hard about using Jimmy's picture for this song. In the end I decided to use it as I was moved very much by a TV press interview that his mother once gave. I just want people to look at the picture on you tube / soundcloud, hear the song and then check out the website ....and if i can redirect at least 1 person to Jimmy website then I feel that it has been worth it. If I am causing offence I will of course remove his picture.

She’s a Japanese girl from Tokyo
He’s a South London boy yeah don’t you know
And they met over the world wide web
Both language learning on the internet
And he saw her picture and he said hello!
Anything happening in Tokyo?
And she wrote back saying it's raining today
Thanks for your mail anyway

And he sent her a couple of songs
She quite liked them and she sang along
They slowly spoke every day
They’re coming the best of friends

She started telling him about her life
It wasn’t going very well
A divorcee with a new boyfriend
He didn’t love her he could tell
He saw her cry on the Internet
And his heart it opened up
He told her girl leave that man
It's time for you to break up

There’s no rush, just take your time
There’s millions of men out there, a loving one you will find
He’ll hold you so tight, he’ll whisper in your ear
You’ll look back on this part of your life, then they’ll be no fear

And even though they’ve never met
They’re now best friends on the Internet
She sends him mails every day, he makes her laugh, he takes the blues away
They’ve never ever met x4

The Battle For Walter Tull played out on BBC London 94.9FM
March 9th 2013
THIS WAS RECORDED FROM THE RADIO = not the best quality. The original song on this site has better quality: Find it here: http://soundcloud.com/ashleycowan/01-the-battle-for-walter-tull

A song based on the true story of Britain's first ever black hero Walter Tull. Walter became the first ever black professional outfield footballer in the UK and the first ever black army officer for the British Army, even though in 1917 the army rule book forbid "any negro or person of colour" from becoming an officer. Tull received his commission in May, 1917. He played 111 times for Northampton Town FC and was signed by Rangers FC before he left to fight in the first world war.
