Like many, most, and perhaps all, of us, I find myself in unchartered waters with everything going on at the moment. The full gamut of human emotions seem sharper than at any time in my life. I am everything from terrified to incredibly hopeful. I am, as the antepenultimate song in the mix that forms the basis of this post says, only human.

I hardly DJ in public any more. But I still listen to plenty of music and want to produce mixes from time to time to keep the juices of creativity flowing. I had been working on this mix for ages without ever fully committing to it. Then COVID-19 came along and over the past month or so I have listened to hundreds of songs seeking those that convey the sorts of feelings I believe we are going through as individuals, as families, as states and nations, and as a species. This mix is what I have come up with. It is meant to be an electronic concerto of the human condition in April 2020, a sonata of our psyche. It is fair to say that, of all the mixes I have laid down over my long career, this is the one I have put the most thought and time and effort into, and by some margin. I hope it reflect this. Most of all, I hope you enjoy it and feel the love with which it has been imbued.

As its title – The Deepness, The Dopeness (Volume 1) implies, this mix is (almost) entirely composed of ultra-deep house tracks, mainly instrumentals, with a few snippets seeping through. I’d say this is how a lot of us are feeling right now, speechless. The tracks have been chosen and programmed in an order that is meant to reflect and evoke in the listener the spectrum of my emotional state at this moment: afraid, alone, helpless but far from hopeless, filled with a sense of foreboding, but ultimately in the same boat as everyone else with a collective feeling of community, albeit at some remove, and unshakable in my belief that, as terrible as the present situation is to endure, we will all be improved in some perverse way for having endured it. Better to ourselves, but more importantly to others, and most importantly to those in need, whose number and intensity of neediness will increase exponentially as a result of what is going on. We have been terrible to each other for too long now, people, and that shit has to stop.

As its subtitle – Taking the ist out of Social D(ist)ancing – completely mis-implies, this mix is aimed more at the heart and head than the feet. But don’t let that stop you from dancing like nobody is watching should the mood grab.

Be safe people, and remember should you need an ear or a shoulder (but not money or toilet paper, I’m afraid I am somewhat short of both just for now), I am just a phone call / message away and at your service 24/7/365.

And to those tagged in this post, even if the type of music in this mix isn’t really within your scope of musical interest as I know, this is an inclusive mix, for friend and stranger alike, so I have tagged all of you. I dedicate it to each and every one of you, my loved ones, in this crazy time. That being said, I want to dedicate it in particular to my dear friend Amanda Soliman and her new hubby Rohin Sharma. Congrats, you guys, can’t wait to celebrate your nuptials publicly, whenever we are permitted.
