<itunes:summary>Alex Fernandes is a Porto born and raised musician, producer, DJ and multi-instrumentalist who has been connected to the electronic music scene for more than 30 years now, twenty of those being directly associated to his most well known and versatile alter-ego: Alex FX.
His first live set in a club (as Alex FX) was back in 1993. The next year he was on the second edition of Barcelona’s finest Sonar Festival, sharing the stage with Orbital and Scorn.
His first releases on 12” started in 1995. Two years later, his groundbreaking debut album “Underdub - A Soundtrack by Alex FX” proved he was far beyond the average dance music producers and recordings around that time, having melted genres like Techno, Breakbeat, Ambient, Experimental or even Drum’n’Bass on a single recording of original tracks, which granted him the Nomination for Best National Artist at the Blitz Awards 97. By 1998, Alex played three full 2-hour live sets on the 3 opening nights from the Expo’98 World Exposition in Lisbon.
He has co-produced and remixed the international likes of Depeche Mode, Recoil, Radiohead, Lamb, Olivia Louvel, Emiliana Torrini and Polaroid Kiss, amongst others. Major Portuguese artists are featured on his list of remix or production duties, such as Repórter Estrábico, Blasted Mechanism, Mão Morta, Da Weasel, Silence 4, Cool Hipnoise, Hipnótica, Belle Chase Hotel, Linha da Frente, Tambor and Bizarra Locomotiva, to name a few. New Portuguese talents such as Miguel Torga, Tiago Fragateiro, Ka§par, Umbra, Expeão, Sagaz, DJ Wild, Malcontent, Fadomorse, Plaza, Mourah or Bueno.Sair.Es have received remix/ production work from him.
Alex FX has also written soundtracks for short and feature films. One of his most acclaimed ones was for a film concert commissioned by the European Capital of Culture - Porto 2001, where a full 2-hour soundtrack was performed live over Fritz Lang’s fully restored masterpiece “Metropolis”. Most recently, he has scored the music for “Porto Electronica 1985-2005” - the first documentary film about the history of Electronic Music in his native Porto town. Alex is one of the people interviewed there. Another big documentary film (“Tecla Tónica”, still in the making), this time about the history of Electronic Music in Portugal will feature in-depth interviews and stories with all of the historical people related to synths and electronica in general (and in Portugal) since the early 60’s to the present days. Alex will be appearing there.
He’s also connected to Audio Production as a Teacher and Lecturer for quite a long time now, being one of the most requested ones on Masterclasses and all which is related to Electronic Music in Portugal.
At the very beginning of 2015, his surprise live set at Lux Frágil in Lisbon, for the Red Bull Music Academy Takeover which was world streamed by Boiler Room was a big success, re-opening the doors to him for the younger generations.
All these years of commitment to music research and the huge diversity of artists and bands with whom he has worked along prove one thing right: Alex FX has an immense palette of musical approaches, with which he may use to colour from the most detailed drum programming to the most darkest and obscurely textured instrumentation. From tempo-less to derailed beats, sometimes to dare crossing the orchestration and experimental field approach - But there’s always a sort of uniqueness to it - it’s safe to say that Alex FX puts his “Sound Signature” on whatever he does.
Alex is currently finishing material for his new concept album and label, both called Echomental. This will also be presented live with a multimedia show/tour called Echomental Live Experience which is promised to be a mind and sight trip on sound and custom film projections. Its hashtags pretty much state that - #darkisamerebeginning #extendedandamplified

Rebuilding the "WANT" mammoth:

Produced in full secret as a surprise track to be premiered only at the Recoil ASHIB Screening Event in Guimarães, 23.11.12.
Both Alan Wilder and the audience didn't knew what was coming their way as the closing track from my warmup live set.

This special version for one of Recoil's most pivotal tracks builds around virtually recorded telephone calls from some of Alan's closest entourage including (in order of appearance) Mauricio Moriarty, Maira Oliva, Christine Thomsi Thomsen, Thomas Köckeis, Tatjana Glück, Kellie Andrews, myself and Rhianna Faye. They all chose one part of the text, but the general idea was each would have to say "and I want" on their native language. Having so much people close to Alan keeping their mouths shut until this piece played for the very first time was no easy task - but we've achieved it somehow:)

Rhianna Faye had the extra responsibility of being the new Nicole Blackman (all due respect), but I believe you will all agree she's done the job perfectly - let me just say her recording was a one take only file - wow!

Answering machine voices are Apple's TextEdit app running Text-to-Speech and choosing between two English spoken voices (male and female). Answering machine bleeps from effects libraries. The orchestration was made in Logic Pro using 4 tracks for French Horn sections, 1 for Steinway Grand Piano, 1 for Electric Bass, 2 for Staccato Strings and other 2 for Orchestral Percussion - all from Logic's internal library.
The rest ran along a series of interconnections between Ableton Suite and Logic. Plugins and Virtual instruments include Native Instruments, Sonic Charge, GForce, LinPlug.
Voices were recorded via Soundcloud, Audacity (as suggested) or other form chosen by each of the "callers".
Facebook was the meeting place.

This was originally meant NEVER to be repeated again.
Track is now public to listen and comment.
The original suspects are also free to expose their experience.

Thank you all, no exceptions!
The Paik Sessions: Music for Vide-O-belisk -

"Vide-O-belisk" is an assemblage designed by Nan June Paik, generally considered the father of video art. Standing nineteen feet (6 m), the sculpture is made from twenty-four vintage television receivers, stacked to form an obelisk. The TVs display three distinct video loops. One features the most significant art objects from the Brooks' permanent collection, along with visual references to ancient Egypt—an obvious allusion to the fact that Memphis, Tennessee was named for the city on the Nile. Another is devoted to the advent of television—it includes key moments such as man's landing on the moon and an Elvis Presley performance, as well as the essential mechanical parts of television technology. The third displays musical instruments and performances, the inspiration for this project. John Cage, Laurie Anderson, and Charlotte Moorman, as well as other significant composers and performing artists who worked together with Paik appear in this footage. The television sets are flanked by neon lights that reference different forms of communication—Egyptian hieroglyphics, a telephone, a musical note. In all, Vide-O-belisk is a monument both to communications and art. Its central location in the Brooks’ rotunda makes it the first work of art one encounters when entering the museum and the gateway to the mid-South’s most encyclopedic art collection.

Paik famously claimed that "Skin has become inadequate in interfacing with reality. Technology has become the body's new membrane of existence."
