At this time of year Ibiza is a riot of colour with fields and verges full of wildflowers. It is also the time when the Gecko's come out of hibernation and are seen scampering about, in a much more energetic fashion than is normal during the heat of the summer. However there's another dimension to the Ibiza spring - it is also a time when people are busying themselves painting, polishing and refurbishing the bars, restaurants, hotels and villas in readiness for the seasons arrivals. This year these activities have an added frisson of enthusiasm.

In calling this mix Ibiza Awakes I am not thinking of an awakening from a deep sleep but rather a spirit to be awakened. This last year has been tough for many people but, whatever we might believe to be the causes and effects of these difficult times I am hopeful that many people will have developed a deeper appreciation of our shared humanity and the incredible value of open hearted human contact.

Enjoy the musical journey ;-) Howard

This is my 4th collection of what I've been calling Lo-Fi Jazz. Not all of it is Lo-Fi and not all of it is Jazz but my voyage of discovery has seen me being quietly obsessed with this music over the past few years.

For me Lo-Fi means one or all of the following: Muffled or muddy mixes, lush orchestral swathes, soulful vocals - sometimes sounding as though they are coming from a poorly tuned radio in the next room - tantalising spoken word samples, distressed or decayed samples, psychedelic phasing and riffs or tones that gleam, like jewels in a muddy field. The additional flavouring of Jazz makes some of these tracks super cool.

I also find some of this music very emotional. They are not hooky or catchy dance tunes but touch something quite deep reminding me of fleeting memories. Play this in the background. Let the tunes wash over you. May they give you as much joy as they do me.

If you do enjoy them please favourite, repost or share as appropriate.

A few years back I put together Vol 1 of Rock Remixes. This turned out to be my most popular mix so I am now returning with a further collection of gems from this decade. I must admit that I have not been completely strict about my classification and think there is at least one track that originates from 69 and a couple that my have strayed as far as 81. Whatever it made me reflect again on what an important decade 70's was for music, stretching as it did from encompassing the remains of hippy psychedelia through to punk and Talking Heads. There are many strands I have left out but then most producers seem to have focused on 80's for their remixes. I will be keeping my eyes and ears open for further remixes from this period and hope to return withy a further volume some time in the future. I hope you enjoy this little collection (2 hours) and if you do please favourite, repost, share or whatever seems appropriate. Love and Music Howard. ;-)

Although Ibiza has not been its usual jubilant self over the last year music has continued to been one of my constants companions and I am thankful to the many artists who continued to produce such beautiful tunes.

The journey of this mix starts in the deep, dark and damp tones of a rainforest before emerging into the sunshine. Soon Jazz takes the lead and introduces us to the masters Mr Davis and old blue eyes himself, Mr Sinatra. Melodic tones soon take over to lead us along the Electric Beach. After this energetic interlude it is time to relax and lay our heads on a cosmic cushion before a rabbit arrives to lead us off down its hole.

Words are often incompetent when trying to describe music ;-) Like trying to explain the taste of chocolate. So, turn up the volume and lay, sit or dance to enjoy the journey.
If you like this little 2 hour selection please Like, Favour and Share as appropriate. ;-)

The first time I heard the Balearic style of DJing described as kaleidoscopic was by my friend DJ Jon Sa Trinxa. I thought then that it was a perfect description of the almost undefinable notion of Balearic. The dictionary defines Kaleidoscopic as follows: "Having complex patterns of colours; multicoloured. Made up of a complex mix of elements; multifaceted" My definition of Balearic is: "Balearic has a sunny complexion. It’s eclectic, all embracing. Yes some Balearic is lush, sweet and tranquil but too much tranquillity turns your brain to mush so for me it’s the light and shade. It can be dramatic and deep but essentially it has a positive tone. Sometimes Balearic makes you want to dance for joy at other times you just want to close your eyes and drift off. Sometimes Balearic is incredibly beautiful and Balaeric can also be …very, very sexy". Actually I think Jon's definition is the best and here is my latest tribute to the Balearic sound. Enjoy, and share. Love Howard.

In August 1989 my partner, friends and I were getting ready for an evenings raving (at the legendary Labryinth Club in Dalston, East London) when this is the set that was playing from a pirate radio. Sadly many of the raves whose meeting points were broadcast on this station became the victims of the rave paranoia that seemed to crescendo this weekend and were closed down by the police. However, I think that this recording perfectly captures the spirit of that time and I am overjoyed to know that this same spirit has continued for over 30 year to the present time. I have added some phasing to this recording to help integrate the various DJ commentaries with the psychedelic drifting tone of the radio signal. I sincerely hope you enjoy this recording because I think it capures a moment in musical history. Enjoy....and if you do enjoy please favourite, repost or share with others that might connect with this period of musical exuberance. Love Howard.

This is the second of a two volume series title ‘Lo-Fi Jazz’.

So what is Lo-Fi? My understanding is that it is a genre of music in which the mix is often muddy in texture but out of which glistening instrumentation can shine. Often samples have been decayed, compressed or distressed, with melodies drifting on the wind of extreme phasing. In particular I favour tracks in which the vocals sound as though they are coming from a slightly out of tune radio.

Thinking about how we store memories it occurred to me that while the memories might be crystal clear (though often incorrect) the events which created the memories are often chaotic and not nearly so pristine as we would like to think. In a reverse manner I think that some Lo-Fi tunes with their chaos and shifting focus has a tremendous capacity to carry emotion. Enjoy ....and if you do please share, favourite, repost or whatever else you can do to share the love. Howard.

Over the last summer I've become somewhat entranced by the Lo-Fi genre. One definition of the genre explains that Lo-fi is: "An aesthetic of recorded music in which the sound quality is lower than the usual contemporary standards". I disagree. Rather than lowering the standard I feel that it has broadened it by including distressed, degraded, muddy and phased layers as elements of the musical palette. It is also often quite psychedelic which suits my sensibility. This mix features a selection of my recent favourite Lo-Fi tunes plus one track, Hausch by Andhim that came out a few years back but which might well have been a flag waver for this emerging genre.

Of course as alway my Balearic mindset wont let me focus on just one genre so this mix also contains a goodly assortment of Balearic eclecticism and silliness. Enjoy...and if you do please favourite, share or do whatever you think is appropriate. Love Howard.

In the meantime I will continue to plough my furrow, wantonly crossing genres barriers ;-) Summers end in Ibiza and this mix features just a small selection of my favourite tunes of the summer season. Quite a few mysterious and deep tunes here which seem appropriate to days of autumn. As is often the case this mix starts off quite chilled before taking off in a variety of alternative directions so stay with it if you like a bit of high energy. I do hope you enjoy, and if you do please favourite, repost and generally share the love. Thanks for all your wonderful support Howard.

This is just a small selection of some of my favourite remixes from this decade (plus a couple in their sparkling original unmixed state). Forgive me if you have heard them before on some of my previous mixes but I thought it would be fun to put them together as a 70's selection. I must admit also that in a couple of instances I have strayed into the 80's but I was already mid mix by the time I realised. You will also find a couple of my own humble remixes. Enjoy (and if you do please favourite and share) Howard.

Thanks to sampling, it became possible to turn any sound into a new musical instrument. Prior to the emergence of the dance scene the only interesting new sounds I could find were coming from the New Age scene but I found most of it rather boring. Dance music added a heart beat that was able to connect musical genres across the world. Much of what I consider to be dance music is not for dancing but the heart beat of dance rhythms has a unifying power. Enjoy, and if you do, enjoy please Share and Favourite. Howard.

January 2015 2 hour mix created with an eye back to some of my favourite tracks from Summer playing Pikes & Me Hotel plus some newer tunes which have captivated me more recently. As usual it contains a fair amount of blissed out Balearic beats but with a thread of tribal - Organic Techno anyone? Plus some interwoven jazz vibes. Oh this is like trying to describe the taste of chocolate. You decide what it is ;-) Enjoy, and if you do, enjoy please Share and Favourite. Howard.
