Initially more a nerd than a DJ, midi mapping, tweaking pieces of hardware and building DIY stuff, Just Friday left his home studio in 2011 to start playing in front of the public. Despite his true love and dedication to techno music, he plays a large variety of "electronic music" in the wide spectrum from ambient, IDM, experimental to Techno.
He also runs a live PA project under the moniker Emerging Patterns.

Initially more a nerd than a DJ, midi mapping, tweaking pieces of hardware and building DIY stuff, Just Friday left his home studio in 2011 to start playing in front of the public. Despite his true love and dedication to techno music, he plays a large variety of "electronic music" in the wide spectrum from ambient, IDM, experimental to Techno.

The Deep Electronics Specials gives a inside look at artists. Showing them where they started or maybe taking a turn into another genre. NOT always the music you hear on Deep Electronics! But also create an enviroment where they can loose themselves into a new depth in sound!

This time Emerging Patterns shows his skills in Improvisation. Using just his hardware and samples on an mobile phone! Creating a deep turn into experimental electronics and sound. The most sounds in his set is created on the spot!

About Emerging Patterns:

Before that, he ran under the moniker « Just Friday » the «3 decks 4…» podcast serie. This almost two years long techno cartography enterprise was appreciated by many in the underground electronic scene.

Now, as a self-confessed hardware addict, he plays regularly full-hardware live performance and long hybrid djsets/jam sessions.

He released 2015 his first tracks on the WAWH001 vinyl and on his own bandcamp, and remixed Fabbro for Vizion Division records.

Preliminary Jam before a gig at 1o1 (FR) (it shows you the kind of things that were played two days later, two hours long, on a proper soundsytem and with a "not-so-much-people-but-what-a-vibe" crowd!!!)

About the setup :
- a mainly analog hardware section (drumboxes,groovebox, synths, sequencers and stompboxes)
- a live sampling section : kaossilator pro on the flight sampling from cellphone mp3 player (for voices) and from an hacked cheap tablet working as a chaotic sound generator

About the way of making the things done :
- a few prewritten patterns (some of the chords and the melodies)
- patterns made to be broken (the drum patterns start with a prewritten section and are heavily tweaked)
- and some liberty (the rest of the thing is done live).

Well to be honnest I don’t really know, I just do it. The hardest part is to deal with tire sometimes so you need to get yourself some chilling moments but I got kids too so it’s not that easy haha. But I love what I do so I (almost) always find the energy to do it. I need to move on and I’m always looking forward to new projects.

Back in 2010, when you started the label, techno wasn't overhyped as it is nowadays... Why did you start Silent Steps? Was it an hard decision?

The decision was pretty easy and came naturally. I had the feeling that I had to do it. I love this music allot and I wanted to spread it. I also wanted to work with and support producers I have much respect for, which was another strong reason.

The label catalog contains release from techno legends, especially from the US (Mike Finesse, Paul Birken, Luis Flores, ...), is it intentional to feature them? How do you choose the artists released? Why is there not a lot of french artists released on Silent Steps?

That’s right there’s a lot of Americans. It is not really intentional, it just came like that. I like those artists and their Techno and it fits well to my label. There are a few french artists too though, but I’m not choosing artists based on their nationality but only on their music. It’s all about feelings nothing else.

You produce mainly analog stuff. What are your favorite tools in the studio? in live sessions?

Yes I do now but I basically started with only a DAW and some plugins. I felt my love for gear growing since about 4/5 years and I slowly started to build myself an hardware studio. I’m now nearly exclusively working on machines to produce, especially with my new project called Vlasyin. My DAW is only a recorder and arranger. I do some processing into it too. My modular system probably is my favorite tool. I love my Tempest (drum machine) allot too. Both for studio and live.

What are your future projects for Silent Steps?

I’m thinking about it. There’s nothing to announce now.

1. The label turned eight this year. How are you explaining Silent Season's longevity? During all these years, were they highs and lows?

Silent Season’s longevity comes from not being in a hurry to achieve anything. It’s a slow and steady progress to release the deepest quality music with a family of artists from around the world.

The high is living life everyday and the low is waiting for new releases to come available.


2. How might you define Silent Season purpose and sound to somebody who never heard any sounds of it ?

Silent Season aims to be open minded and diverse in sounds. From ambient to techno people can find something they connect within the catalog.


3. What defines the silent season's releases? Is there a thing in common between those different and numerous LPs and EPs?

Deep ethereal and atmospheric sounds permeate all Silent Season releases. Some music is best suited for vinyl, some for CD, some for digital, but regardless it is all of the high quality.


4. You use recycled materials for your packaging and the nature is a central theme of the Silent Season mythology. Is it something that also mark your life, something that counts beyond musical and aesthetically purposes?

Life should be lived by leaving the smallest foot print possible while on this earth. We can long longer burden Mother Nature with our disregard for the environment therefore we must do what we can to minimize our impact.

5. What is this tree?

The Silent Season tree is an old growth Maple. The bigleaf or broadleaf Maple, is native to Vancouver Island and the coastal mainland of BC.


6. There were during the last years a kind of recognition for techno music. Did you also see a growing love also for the deeper and dubbier niche Silent Season belongs to?

There will always be a desire for deep music, be it ambient, techno or dubbier variations, Silent Season aims to bridge the gaps between these sounds and the create the emotions that go along with them.

7. Can you tell us what are the three most important Silent Season releases for you?

Probably Ohwert - Yesteryear for being the first physical CD release. The Full Circle 12” compilation for kicking off the vinyl series. And Rasmus Hedlund SS01 for believing in the vision and contributing our first release.

Their residents DJs, counting talented guys as Mike Servito or Bryan Kasenic, played during this years alongside some of the most innovative talents in Dance music, shattering genres and playing quality music.
But this year, the bunker NY went way farer, launching its own imprint. And since the first EP release, it was a constant flow of quality EPs, transcending genres and countries. The label gained quickly a great recognition, Resident Advisor even stating them as one of the ten most influential labels in 2014.
Alongside the mix, Bryan Kasenic, the Bunker NY thinking head kindly answers to a few questions. And he did it fast!

1. How the bunker NY mutates from his original form -a venue, a party- to the actual hydra it is now (a venue, a podcast, a label, a booking agency, did I miss something?)
It all happened quite naturally. First, The Bunker was just a party. Then my resident DJs started getting requests to play other parties and had no agent to deal with it, so I started doing that. The Bunker Podcast started in 2007 and is still going strong. We have so many recordings from the events to share, and it's been a good way to share our sound with people who can't make it to the parties. The label was in the works for a long time in my head, and was launched last year when I felt I finally had the resources to do it properly. At this point all of the various arms feed into each other and the synergy is great!

2. How did you select the music you released on the label? Does the NYC musical heritage (the disco golden age and the early times of house, the paradise garage, ...) still has an impact on how the music is received and made in your city?
I noticed a lot of my friends making really interesting music had no real outlet for it, so I pushed them to finish things for label consideration. I am friends with everyone on the label, it's just an extension of the community of people around our events. Making music for the party that was inspired by the party, that we can now share with the world.

3. How did the EDM rise impacted the night in the USA?
They say all boats rise in high tide, but there's really no way to know for sure what kind of impact it's had on our parties. It certainly feels like a different world and audience that has nothing to do with us really.

4. The residents DJS made a lot in shaping the Bunker identity. I have friends in the USA who are found of your parties wich are almost uncharted territories for us, European. Can you describe a bit their specifity and the little something that made people say they are unique ?
Maybe your friends would be better suited to answer that than I. We have a very strong midwest influence (3 of our 4 resident DJs are from Detroit and I'm from Pittsburgh), and of course NYC influences us as well. American and European parties are really different beasts.

5. What are the next projects of the Bunker NY ?
We are lining up all of our releases for the year and planning more events in NYC and beyond.

6. One year ago, did you thought having such a reception in Europe and around the world (a label party at the Berghain, being stated on RA as one of the 10 most influencial label in 2014, ...)? Will it change the way you work?
The label made a bigger splash that I really anticipated, but I can't say that I'm shocked. Does not feel like it's changing the way I work. If anything I'm making an effort not to let that happen.

He also honored us by answering a short interview :

1. Can you tell us what leads you to create aconito records?

I created Aconito Records in 2007 but it took me a while to create the first release. I always had this dream since I was 17: to have my own record label where I could choose the music to release, music I like, and the different artists from all over the world. In 2005 I did my first release with a record label called 'Disappear Here', but I had to follow their guide lines when I was creating the music and sometimes had to accept compromises. Then I decided that it was the right moment to open my own project for my own music, a space where I could be creatively free and have no creative and sound restriction. I consider Aconito Records as a platform for artists and myself to push our music a bit forward, and that is what I'm trying also to do with the artists who works with me, pushing them to make something different and original.

2. The more the time goes, the more aconito seems to release tracks which are exploring the borders between deep techno and ambient or experimental... Is it still relevant for you to release only stomping techno and floor banger as a label in 2014?

I never had the intention to release only stomping techno and floor banger. I release the music I like. It could be techno or ambient or experimental but it depends on my personal taste and on my judgement.

3. How do you work as a producer? What are your favorite tools in the studio?

I think my artist life changed when I met Glimpse which released my first track on Disappear Here a label distributed by Kompakt. But when I studied Sonic Arts my vision of music changed. I discovered different ways of making music, different technologies and that University course had an amazing impact on my creativity.

6. What are the aconito records upcoming projects?

Coming up next is my collaboration with Darren Roberts (Deepbass) on vinyl and only vinyl, 3 techno tracks that we created in Glasgow last summer. Then later in 2015 will come out as well the last vinyl of the Seed Series that will be a various artists. Also I will keep releasing more experimental and ambient stuff on the Digital Series, with some new and old artist of the label, I will also include an experiment by myself that I'm working on at the moment, but I see the Digital Series as “more for listening music”.

It's difficult to find 5 favourite tracks ever, there is so much stuff I like, I have a collection of more than 5000 vinyl. I'll say few title of tracks I love that comes to my mind right now. ]]> The label released stuff from Ness, Giorgi Gigli, Hironori Takahashi, Etapp Kyle, Obtane, and many others. As a cherry on the cake, Andrea, the label founder also released several EPs on the label under is moniker nAx_Acid.

He also honored us by answering a short interview :

1. Can you tell us what leads you to create aconito records?

I created Aconito Records in 2007 but it took me a while to create the first release. I always had this dream since I was 17: to have my own record label where I could choose the music to release, music I like, and the different artists from all over the world. In 2005 I did my first release with a record label called 'Disappear Here', but I had to follow their guide lines when I was creating the music and sometimes had to accept compromises. Then I decided that it was the right moment to open my own project for my own music, a space where I could be creatively free and have no creative and sound restriction. I consider Aconito Records as a platform for artists and myself to push our music a bit forward, and that is what I'm trying also to do with the artists who works with me, pushing them to make something different and original.

2. The more the time goes, the more aconito seems to release tracks which are exploring the borders between deep techno and ambient or experimental... Is it still relevant for you to release only stomping techno and floor banger as a label in 2014?

I never had the intention to release only stomping techno and floor banger. I release the music I like. It could be techno or ambient or experimental but it depends on my personal taste and on my judgement.

3. How do you work as a producer? What are your favorite tools in the studio?

Tapeface is a structure leaded by (and hosting mostly) Tapage. This guy released 4 albums on the legendary IDM's label : Tympanik audio. He also recently releases his latest LPs one of the finest structures when it comes to "different shaped" electronic music : Ad Noiseam.

Tapeface hosts mostly Tapage's releases, but also collabs with Espoir, and a release by Gleb Foulga. Tapage also answered to a short interview you can read there :
1 You released a lot of things on exceptionnal platform such as Tympanik Audio or more recently Ad Noiseam. Why did you create Tapeface whilst in a context you were already established in this labels?

Tapeface was born in a strange time for me as an artist. Before I released my first album on Tympanik Audio I had already been writing music for several years. I had a lot of material ready and those tracks formed the core of my first set of releases. At a certain point I still had a lot of great music, but it was impossible for me to create a coherent story out of them. I started Tapeface as a way to release these tracks in smaller collections. For me it was also about reducing the pile of old music in order to shift my focus to new musical areas to explore.

2 How do you produce your tracks? Are you working on a particular setup? Are you using machines and instruments or are you working mostly on DAW?

I'll use anything as long as it helps me to express a musical idea. The core of my Tapage work is still the 'tracker' way of composing. My main DAW is Renoise but I also write my own musical programs using SuperCollider. That gives me a lot of flexability on the digital front. At the same time I also have a nice collection of toy instruments, some guitars and a lot of (circuitbend) electronics. Fieldrecordings is yet another way of getting some new sounds. In the end its all about experimentation and trying out new things. I tend to keep on evolving my work proces and steer away from particular 'tricks' that give a reliable result. I rather fail while trying out something new than succeed at repeating myself.

3 There're mostly releases of yours on tapeface. Who are those enigmatics "Espoir" and "Gleb Foulga"? How they come to be the only other people released on Tapeface?

Both are very good friends of mine. I'm collaborating a lot with Espoir (Roald van Dillewijn). He is also a bandmember of The Void* (http://www.thevoidpointers.com) with which we're working on a full length album next year. Gleb is an amazing composer and I really wanted to give him a platform to show his talents.

4 Your style flows from ambient to almost techno glitchy tracks. How do you organize your live acts, your sets? Do you tend to play "harder" in front of the public or do you maintain the vibes of your work as a producer during your gigs?

When I perform live I do adjust the music to the vibe of the evening. I have played sets ranging from harsh noise to ambient and almost anything in between. These kinds of shifts can also happen during a set. With a lot of performances I go as an audience member, the artists seem to stick to one particular genre. I prefer to mix things up a bit more... much more exciting.

5 IDM's landscape is sometimes really strange for people who aren't use to it ("3 Decks 4..." listeners are more techno music listeners). Do you have any advices to give them if they want to dive into this genre?

First:
Forget about genres... just enjoy the sounds!
then also... Some music really needs to grow on you before it starts to make sense. So give it some time. Listen to all the little details. Try to enjoy the complexities.

1 Pinkamn is almost two years old now, but I assume the process that leads you to launch the imprint was far longer... How can you shortly describe it?
-----It took me six months to set everything up. Contact with the artists, finding a record plant, distributor, someone for the artwork, mastering, promotion.. all that stuff.

2 There's realy different artists on Pinkman, but that bunch of releases, which might have seem heteroclite on the paper, works together really well. How do you succeed in creating a strong identity with artists that are soo different?
-----Well i didn't thought about that too much with Pinkman. It's just basically my own music taste haha, and that's pretty versatile.

3 You just launched Charlois, Pinkman's sublabel... Why did you find it necessary? What is the purpose of Charlois, compared with what you accomplished with Pinkman?
-----I just had the feeling i needed to do it. With Charlois i can walk a different path when it comes to artwork for example. But the most important thing, the music. The sound of Pinkman is going to be darker next year, focussing more on the techno/house/wave side of electronic music. Music released on Charlois will be more in the disco/electro corner i guess.

4 What are your upcoming projects ?
-----Just keep on doing what i do. Continue with both the labels. Doing parties, making a monthly radioshow on Intergalactic FM. And off course dj'ing. Next to that we're going to give away a free digital compilation on Souncloud really soon. So people should follow the Pinkman sound cloud if they don't want to miss out on this.

5 There's a strong and very particular identity in the Dutch scene, when it comes to techno and house... Pinkman's releases immediately ring a bell for Delsin's or Creme's lovers... How can you explain the fact that some of the bests labels in the genre you dig are from "Den Haag"'s neighbourhood?
-----Well for me my musical education really started when i discovered Intergalactic FM. So yeah, all these labels like Viewlexx, Creme and Bunker connected to that was for me the biggest inspiration to start my own label. But also younger labels like Midlight, Bio Rhythm, BAKK and Bordello A Parigi always inspire me to just keep on doing what i do.

15 Sean Dixon Final Chapter Final Chapter]]> This week is focused on Pinkman Records, a Dutch label throwing since 2013 very nice releases of electro, acid house and weird disco, in the purest "Den Haag" tradition... Think Bunker, Creme or labels in that range to define Pinkman sounds and influences.
Pinkman is leaded by Mr Marsmann, and to introduce the mix, he answers to a short interview...

1 Pinkamn is almost two years old now, but I assume the process that leads you to launch the imprint was far longer... How can you shortly describe it?
-----It took me six months to set everything up. Contact with the artists, finding a record plant, distributor, someone for the artwork, mastering, promotion.. all that stuff.

2 There's realy different artists on Pinkman, but that bunch of releases, which might have seem heteroclite on the paper, works together really well. How do you succeed in creating a strong identity with artists that are soo different?
-----Well i didn't thought about that too much with Pinkman. It's just basically my own music taste haha, and that's pretty versatile.

3 You just launched Charlois, Pinkman's sublabel... Why did you find it necessary? What is the purpose of Charlois, compared with what you accomplished with Pinkman?
-----I just had the feeling i needed to do it. With Charlois i can walk a different path when it comes to artwork for example. But the most important thing, the music. The sound of Pinkman is going to be darker next year, focussing more on the techno/house/wave side of electronic music. Music released on Charlois will be more in the disco/electro corner i guess.

4 What are your upcoming projects ?
-----Just keep on doing what i do. Continue with both the labels. Doing parties, making a monthly radioshow on Intergalactic FM. And off course dj'ing. Next to that we're going to give away a free digital compilation on Souncloud really soon. So people should follow the Pinkman sound cloud if they don't want to miss out on this.

5 There's a strong and very particular identity in the Dutch scene, when it comes to techno and house... Pinkman's releases immediately ring a bell for Delsin's or Creme's lovers... How can you explain the fact that some of the bests labels in the genre you dig are from "Den Haag"'s neighbourhood?
-----Well for me my musical education really started when i discovered Intergalactic FM. So yeah, all these labels like Viewlexx, Creme and Bunker connected to that was for me the biggest inspiration to start my own label. But also younger labels like Midlight, Bio Rhythm, BAKK and Bordello A Parigi always inspire me to just keep on doing what i do.

This week i'm very pround to introduce you the work of friends from Chicago, whho do a lot of work for techno music and release a lot of very good free music (but please, share at least of fiew buckets to help them in their projects!

The mix was recorded on an hybrid setup (a groovebox, two modular noise generator, three decks for the tracks) and it was a lot of fun...

But most of all, I interviewed Adam, for Don't trust Humans, who answered my questions about his label, the OFR podcast serie, Chicago techno scene, and more...

*Can you describe the processes which lead you to the actual form of "Don't trust Humans" (podcast, event promotion, label)? What came first and what was the purpose behind each of those activities?*

/Don’t Trust Humans originally started as a platform for me to help expose certain DJs/artists that I liked that maybe weren’t getting enough exposure. At the time, DTH was extremely small, so I’m not sure how much influence I had on others, but I had a group of followers that would check out the podcasts whenever they would surface.
The label came next. A couple years into the project, I had asked a few friends if they wanted to join me, and contribute. This is when we decided to release the first Hal Floyd, Vision. He was a friend of Daniel (Debbie), so we thought that we could start to build the label with his material. Braden (Hal Floyd) was really the foundation to release original work.
Events came later that year (2012). I was confronted by Qbot when she was living in Chicago to do a DTH themed night for our 2 year anniversary at a Chicago club called Primary. It was a Thursday night. Attendance wasn’t great, but we had a lot of our friends come out. That was the start of our small run of events. I’m very pleased with the events we did. We brought artists that we truly admire, and worried about costs later. That mentality can’t exist for an extended period of time, but having the people we hosted play our parties was much more important to us. Events are taking a backseat for us right now./


*You release your music on bandcamp. Is there a kind of ethical or political ambition behind it?*

/Bandcamp is a great resource. We were using a web service before that allowed us to put together a very minimal website, but once our membership ran out there, we transferred our dot com to bandcamp. The payout works in the favorite of the label/artists. We are a net label, but do accept any ‘donation’ to help cover costs of mastering, and to get back to the contributing artists.
The plan is to get a physical release out at some point. This all costs money, as I’m sure anyone knows. The core members of DTH are students, or very recent graduates, so we try to work within our means the best we can. /


*Chicago is an iconic city when it comes to house music. In this mythological context, what is the place of techno scene in the windy city?*

/I could write a lengthy response for this question, but I’ll try to keep it short. First, I love this city. I love it for many reasons beyond music, but the music it presents made a huge impact on me. That said, techno is a struggle here. I would love to see a wider acceptance when it comes to this genre of dance music. In order for this to happen, more promoters, club owners, and everyone in ‘power’ is going to need to take some risks. Unfortunately, I don’t see that happening anytime soon.
That said, we get an incredible amount of artists passing through each year, so I really can’t complain too much. I would just love to see consistent high caliber techno events like we see in New York (and LA), happen in Chicago.
The label's name "Don't trust humans" might seem a bit cynical. Is there a deeper meaning behind this?
There most likely is, but I can’t pinpoint it. I started DTH during a rather strange, and not so memorable, period of my life. The past four years have been somewhat of a rollercoaster for me, but this project has kept me somewhat grounded since its inception. It wouldn’t be too much of a longshot to assume that the name stems from a skewed perception of my surroundings at the time, but mostly it probably just popped in my head, and I thought it had a nice ring to it. /


*What are the label's upcoming projects?*

/We have some releases in the bag that we need to get mastered. Very excited to share DTH010, which comes from stateside Only for Robots veteran, Worker/Parasite, who recently released on Opal Tapes? Ben was brought to our attention via Dreamlogicc (San Francisco). That release should see the light of day before the end of the year. In addition to that, we have some demos from a new project out of Philadelphia that was a collection of live jams. Really deep and intricate stuff. It’s always a pleasure getting new faces to submit demos to us. We are a small scale label who does things their own way, so for artists to invest faith in us is pretty damn cool.
As always, we will continue to push our previous releases and projects from DTH members. Hal Floyd is a machine when it comes to composing music. He has an incredible amount of talent, so it was great to see another label pick up his work, which was featured on XLR8R. Debbie recently graduated from NYU, and is still residing in New York. He’s constantly playing records, and working on his own productions. I feel blessed (for lack of a better word) to have these guys on board with this project. They both have a huge amount of talent, and I truly believe the future is very bright for them./


*If you have to pick five tracks in your label's catalogue?*

/That’s tough. I can’t pick five tracks. I’m proud of every one of our releases. When we first decided we were going to turn this into a label, the idea was to release music from everyone involved with Don’t Trust Humans. At the time, it was me, and 3 other friends (Hal Floyd, Debbie, and Pablo Duarte – artist names). Then, we were approached by other artists, or we approached other artists, to see if they’d be interested in contributing. Our catalogue spans different styles, and we will continue to work without boundaries. /


*If you have to give your actual top five?*

/Picking a top 5 ever is an extremely difficult task. Instead, I can handpick a few tracks that I’ve really been enjoying recently.

Unlike most other labels, Future Flash is identified by a medieval style wax seal bearing the label's logo, meaning the records can only be played on one side. As such they are highly sought after collectors items and vanish from the market place very quickly. All vinyls of this label comes stamped with the wax seal, and an ink stamp detailing the Artists and tracks, all contained within a paper sleeve and a disco bag.

Perseus Traxx leads this label and monopolizes most of the issue with his great Acid'n'Jackin' house style, but you can also find artists like Operator Tracey or Cestrian on this label.

This podcast also included some yet-unreleased material from High Jack Records (Ukraine), and stuff from other labels in the same mood as 100 per cent pure records, Delsin Records, M.O.S. Recordings Minority's Records and Creme Organization.

I didn't understood at first he wanted a 100% Modular Expansion podcast...
