Fanatico is a new project of DJ-producer Mathias Schaffhäuser and vocalist Jorge Socarrás from New York.
The project came about when Mathias Schaffhäuser did a remix of a track from the Patrick Cowley and Jorge Socarrás vintage 70’s album, “Catholic,” which was retro-released in 2009 by Macro Music, Berlin. The two men had never met, but Socarrás contacted Schaffhäuser to say how much he liked the remix. Schaffhäuser, who was an old fan of Socarrás’ 80’s band, Indoor Life, replied suggesting that perhaps they might work together sometime. Through subsequent emails both expressed how they’d each been wanting to interpret some cover songs, eventually leading to Socarrás going to Köln in August 2010 and spending a week recording with Schaffhäuser in his studio. The two had remarkable chemistry from the start, working together as if they were longtime music partners. Indeed Socarrás felt that in Schaffhäuser’s envelope-pushing minimalism he’d found a contemporary successor to his earlier collaborators.

In the late 1970s, New York singer and actor Jorge Socarras recorded amazing Agit disco tracks with disco and Hi-NRG producer Patrick Cowley. Three years ago Makro published them for the very first time under the name “Catholic”. As frontman of Indoor Life, Jorge, in 1981, also recorded a fantastic experimental disco album. Mathias Schaffhäuser, a fan since school days, met Socarras in 2009 through a remix production. After that, Mathias invited him to Cologne to produce new music together – and Fanatico was born. On their debut album, Socarras croons with a sexy longing in his voice, with a slight reminiscence of Bryan Ferry. His body seems to actually feel what he sings, which is quite extraordinary for contemporary Vocal House. It’s a flawless production, and the music is a perfect balance between track and song and never gives the impression of being solely aimed at clubs. That there are many cover versions isn’t all too obvious: “200 Light Years From Home” doesn’t sound like The Rolling Stones and Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” will surely conjure up endorphin storms on the dance floor.
