Is this still Mambo? Or does Tito Puente’s classic tune “Caramelos“ turn into some sort of crazy rollercoaster ride in the hands of Orkesta Mendoza where merely the lyrics and the chorus bear some resemblance to the original? A rocking punch instead of the tame original arrangement and orchestration. A dirty, earthy groove instead of counting out rhythms. Wild brass sections and a slide guitar that ultimately transforms the ditty into a mad rodeo ride.
“Caramelos“ is a truly breathtaking hint as to what we can expect from the new album scheduled for late summer. In the meantime, band leader Sergio Mendoza is on a global tour with Calexico, conquers the crowds in the UK and Australia with Mexrrissey – his insane cover project of The Smiths / Morrissey songs which hit no. 1 in the US alternative Latin charts – and takes off on a warm-up tour throughout Europe with his fabulous Orkesta Mendoza.
