<itunes:summary><![CDATA[Formed in 2017, is a Johannesburg/Katlehong based jazz band. The brand represents the convergence of both jazz and traditional music culture with various accents from around the African continent. The diversity of cultures in the group contributes mostly to the sound of the band. “The sound of the universe” is what they use as reference to their music. This is because their music is not only written and performed for entertainment and pleasure, but also to foster intercultural relationships, and promoting cross cultural relationships, mutual respect, understanding and unity. But more than the diversity of the individual players, the defining characteristic of 251Afrika’s music is the joy of learning from each other, performing together in the perpetual push to grow creatively.
With as many as eleven members in rotation. 251Afrika was formed by Alto Saxophonist and primary composer Simo Sibiya and his friend, Tenor Saxophonist and primary composer Lunga Gubelana; starting inconspicuously enough with friends they met through local live music jam sessions. Three years later, from when the band was established they had the privilege of performing on some of the great South African festivals such as the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz, Moretele Park Tribute to the Legends Concert, Maropeng Cradle Colour Festival to mention a few and have also shared the stage with artists such as Lady Zamar, Sho Majozi, Vusi Nova, Skwatta Camp, etc.
In a collective quest of learning and experimenting with music to find innovative ways of making the music “better” for the world to enjoy. 251Afrika is also committed in making a change in their community and becoming role models/inspiration to the young and old generation. They are dedicated to winning music awards, and attracting new jazz and traditional music fans in SA and Globally.
251Afrika’s music is fresh and familiar at the same time, with absolutely addictive melodies and harmonies. A fusion of what is gone before, yet a unique melange of what is right now.]]></itunes:summary>
